🐾 Now is the Time to Visit Thames SPCA! 🐾

Our kennels and cattery are full of wonderful animals waiting for a second chance, and we're reaching out to our community to help them find the loving homes they deserve.

If you've been thinking about adopting a pet, now is the perfect time to come and meet the animals in our care. We have cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies all looking for families to call their own. Sometimes the perfect match isn't the one you expect, so we encourage you to visit and see who steals your heart!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families are always welcome to visit.

🕙 We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am – 3:00pm.

We are also urgently looking for more foster carers. Our team is currently overwhelmed with puppies and we're hoping to get some of them into foster homes as soon as possible. Foster homes provide a safe, loving environment while animals wait for their forever families.

We're expecting an intake of kittens over the coming weeks and would love to hear from anyone interested in helping these little ones get the best start possible.

🐾 Inspiring the Next Generation of Animal Advocates! 🐾

Yesterday, Thames SPCA had the pleasure of travelling to Whangamatā to visit Growing Wings Early Learning Centre, where Centre Manager Brent Thomas brought along Breeze for a special play session with the children.

We love opportunities to get out into our community and teach young people about animal care, kindness, and animal welfare. During our visits, we share educational books with students, present interactive slides, and introduce them to our educational website, helping children learn about responsible pet ownership and how they can make a positive difference in the lives of animals.

A huge thank you to the wonderful team and children at Growing Wings for making us feel so welcome. Breeze certainly enjoyed all the attention!

We are also looking forward to visiting the wonderful Waitakaruru School next term. Some of the students there have already enjoyed several visits to our SPCA Centre, and we can't wait to continue building on that connection.

🎉 Volunteer Week is underway! 🎉

This week we're celebrating the incredible people who give their time, energy, and hearts to the animals in our care.

🛏️ SHEETS NEEDED! 🛏️

The Thames SPCA is currently running low on sheets and would be incredibly grateful for any donations.

Unwanted flat sheets, fitted sheets, or duvet covers are all put to good use helping us keep our animals warm, comfortable, and their bedding areas clean.

If you have any spare sheets tucked away in a cupboard that you no longer need, we would love to take them off your hands!

Donations can be dropped off directly to the Thames SPCA.

📣 Puppies Before Profit – Bring in Breeder Laws! 📣

Today, we’re launching our Puppies Before Profit campaign, to raise awareness around New Zealand’s lack of dog breeding legislation and to build support for law reforms.

Currently, we’re FAR behind other countries when it comes to dog breeding laws. In New Zealand:

🐾 Anyone can breed and sell puppies
🐾 There are no restrictions on the number of breeding dogs a person can keep
🐾 There are no minimum supervision levels
🐾 There are no minimum or maximum ages for breeding
🐾 There are no maximum number of litters across a dog’s lifetime
🐾 There are no restrictions on close inbreeding.

Despite the current lack of specific rules, our recently commissioned survey found that 96% of New Zealanders think dog breeding should be regulated.

This isn’t a niche animal welfare issue. It’s something that New Zealanders deeply care about. We need clear, enforceable standards that apply to all breeders, and ensure every breeding dog receives appropriate care ❤️

🐾 We absolutely LOVE receiving updates from our adopted animals! 🐾

There is nothing better than hearing how our former residents are settling into their new lives, and this update certainly made us smile.

"Hello!
I thought i would share an update on Rambo (formerly Diesel who i adopted in February.
He has brought so much joy to our family. He loves his daycare and the beach. My youngest son Brodie and him are thick as thieves. He owns my bed at night and loves the fire place. Thank you for bringing him into our lives"

And that's not all...

"He goes on farm visits and hydrotherapy at his day care, loves the vets, eats everything, and is just the absolute love of my life. I'm so grateful to have him in our lives 😊"

Seeing animals thrive in loving homes and become cherished members of the family is the best reward imaginable.

Who doesn't love an adoption update! 🐾❤️

Following on from our previous post, we're thrilled to share that the adult dog who recently headed out on a trial has now officially been adopted. Even more exciting, we've finalised several puppy adoptions this week as well!

Today alone, one cat and three kittens have gone off to begin their new lives with loving families. While we absolutely love sharing these happy moments with our community, not every adopter is comfortable having their photos shared publicly—and we completely respect that.

Just know that behind the scenes, Thames SPCA continues to find wonderful homes for animals every week. Many are staying right here in our local community, while others are heading to surrounding towns and cities to start their next chapter.

It's been another fantastic week of life-changing matches, and we couldn't do it without the support of our amazing adopters, foster families, volunteers, and supporters.

And if you're looking to add a furry friend to your family, now is a great time to visit! We are absolutely bursting with litters of puppies at the moment, with many adoption-ready pups waiting to meet their new families and several smaller litters that will be ready in the coming weeks.

Also we have plenty of adorable kittens currently available and many more waiting in the wings, ready to fill our adoption pens as spaces become available.

❤️ ASH'S WAIT IS FINALLY OVER ❤️

Every long-stay dog dreams of the day their perfect family walks through the door.

For Ash, that day has finally come.

After spending far too long waiting for a family to call his own, Ash has found exactly what he deserves, a loving home filled with people who adore him.

We were overjoyed recently when a group of young people came to Thames SPCA with a very special mission. Rather than looking at the puppies or newest arrivals, they wanted to meet our long-stay dogs, the ones who are so often overlooked while they patiently wait for their chance.

When they met Ash, the connection was almost instant.

It was clear he was content in their company, and before long they returned to take him home for a weekend trial. There was just one small question mark....their home already included five cats and a small dog, and cats were completely new territory for Ash!

Thanks to careful, slow introductions, Ash's first meetings with the cats went extremely well. Moving into a home already ruled by five feline residents could have been daunting, but Ash seemed happy to respect their space, and the cats accepted him into the family.

The smiles, excitement, and pure happiness were bursting at the seams when the family returned to make Ash's adoption official. It was a truly special moment for everyone involved.

After saying his goodbyes, Ash proudly completed the famous Thames SPCA Walk of Fame and headed out the door towards his new life.

We couldn't be happier for this beautiful boy and his wonderful family.

To the incredible young people who chose to seek out a long-stay dog, thank you. It takes a special kind of compassion to look beyond age, length of stay, or popularity and instead focus on giving a deserving animal the chance they have been waiting for.

Your thoughtfulness, kindness, and willingness to open your hearts to Ash gives us so much hope.

If this is the future generation of animal lovers, then the future is looking incredibly bright.
