🏔️ The hill we will die on:
A dog that wants to greet every dog they see isn't necessarily a well-socialised dog.
And "Don't worry, my dog's friendly!" isn't a free pass for them to rush over.

We've somehow created this idea that the ideal dog is one that wants to interact with every dog and every person they encounter. But social skills aren't measured by how many friends your dog wants to make.

A dog that pulls towards every dog, rushes into another dog's space, or can't disengage and move on isn't always displaying confidence or friendliness.
❔Sometimes it's excitement.
❔Sometimes it's frustration.
❔Sometimes it's poor impulse control.
❔Sometimes it's simply a lack of experience learning that they don't need to greet everyone.

A truly social dog can often do something much harder:
🐾 Notice another dog
🐾 Stay calm
🐾 Respect space
🐾 Move on when asked - by both their human and the other dog

Just as importantly, not every dog wants to be greeted.
🩵Some dogs are training.
🩵Some are recovering from difficult experiences.
🩵Some are naturally more reserved.
🩵And some simply prefer a smaller social circle.

We don't expect every human to enthusiastically greet every stranger they pass.
Why do we expect it from dogs?

Instead of asking:
📢 "My dog's friendly!"

Try asking:
💬 "Can dogs to meet?" (and be prepared for the answer to be no)

Because friendliness isn't the same as consent, and good social skills aren't measured by how many dogs your dog can say hello to. They're measured by how well they can navigate the world without feeling the need to.

Meet Alfie, a gorgeous 5-month-old German Spitz 🐾

Unfortunately, Alfie recently suffered an injury that required surgery. As soon as his owner started describing what had happened, I couldn't help but think of my own dog, Hazy, who went through the exact same surgery at a similar age.

The silver lining? Alfie's recovery is expected to be around 4–6 weeks, compared to Hazy's lengthy 12-week recovery period! Having been through the process myself, it was really special to be able to support Alfie's owner not only as a trainer, but as someone who genuinely understands the challenges that come with caring for a young dog recovering from surgery.

We chatted about some of the co-operative care techniques that helped Hazy through her rehab and physio exercises, along with practical tips for getting Alfie out safely during recovery. We also discussed plenty of training and enrichment ideas to help keep his busy little brain occupied while his body heals.

Recovery can be tough for both dogs and their humans, but with the right support, management, and mental stimulation, it can also be a fantastic opportunity to build confidence, strengthen your relationship, and teach some valuable new skills.

I'm looking forward to seeing Alfie again soon and continuing his training journey as he gets back on all four paws! ❤️🐶

✨Testimonial✨
We couldn’t recommend Sophie and her knowledge for dog training enough. We were hesitant to get a border collie puppy - although it was our dream - we absolutely were of the understanding that these dogs take a lot of effort in training. Sophie put us at ease from day one as soon as we reached out requesting a spot for her Puppy Training class. She knew I wasn’t the most confident with dogs having not grown up with them, however I still tell everyone who has dogs that this changed our lives.
From the start her communication and outlay of the training program was presented to us and made it really easy for us to understand what we needed to do each week. Her classes are in such depth that you do feel like you’re taking on another full-time role however we knew this was exactly what we needed to to get the Puppy of our dreams and Sophie encouraged us from the beginning (and was honest it wasn’t going to be a breeze!)
Sophie uncovered so much information we didn’t even realise we had to think about in those first 16 weeks when you have a Puppy, this is the prime time for how they will behave for the rest of their life. She was there whenever we needed her whether that was at our home dealing with crate training, barking, chewing and keeping busy ideas.
Something that stuck with us was how Sophie highlighted the full life and behaviour of a dog and how they progress through each stage, so when she advised us that she did teen classes, we absolutely jumped on this opportunity. Because our Puppy was brilliant through the Puppy training I didn’t think the teen classes would be as hard however our Puppy had changed immensely throughout the teenage phase of his life, but again Sophie put us at ease and really leant in and understood exactly how we were feeling and what we were going through because she has been through the same thing with her dogs.

Two years later, we are still learning with Sophie and her team and cannot believe the progress he’s made only just having turned two years old. He is still so young but the improvement that we have seen in him from spending time with Sophie is second to none. All of our friends compliment us about how well behaved is and they are blown away that he is only two years old. Again, we probably didn’t understand what we were getting ourselves into getting a border collie Puppy but we would not have changed anything for the world and we are forever grateful that we found Sophie and her team and continue to invest in this for our pup and ourselves.
Not only is Sophie so knowledgeable with puppies and dogs of all kinds and ages she is genuinely one of the kindest and most passionate people and wants to help everyone around her and we absolutely feel that she genuinely cares about every single one of her clients. Couldn’t recommend her enough.
A HUGE thanks to Oakley's owners for this encouraging, and very reinforcing, testimonial about their experience training with us so far. It was been a priviledge to be a part of Oakley's training journey and a total hats off moment to his human's for putting in the hard work!

Hi, I’m Sarah!

I am a dog trainer at Real World Canine, working with pet dogs to live full, happy lives here on the Kāpiti Coast.

I have been with Sophie since 2020, learning the ropes of working with dogs and developing my skills as a trainer. This journey was sparked by losing my previous dog, Moana. She was an aggressive bully mix who taught me endless lessons in handling fear-based reactivity and understanding the compassion needed when working with these dogs and their owners. Underneath her genetic fear, she was an incredibly loving dog who was just trying to feel safe.

It was through her that I learned about positive reinforcement, clicker training, and management to keep her and others safe.

My current dog is a young border collie called Sadie, and she has been a troublemaker since the day one! She has taught me a lot about breed-specific enrichment and fulfilment—there was no point trying to work against her herding instincts, so I learned how to work with them instead. We compete in scent work competitions, she has her Advanced Trick Dog title, and we love exploring local trails and walks.

Whether you have a herding dog wanting to work, a terrier who loves digging, or a retriever who constantly wants to hold things in their mouth, I love finding ways to work with these behaviours rather than against them.

I am passionate about continued education and am working towards becoming an accredited dog trainer. I have completed courses with the School of Canine Science and Spirit Dog Training, I am an active member of the Fenzi Dog Sports Academy, I have attended conferences across New Zealand, and I am a certified muzzle fitter.

I would love to help you find ways to work with your dog and their genetics, rather than against them, so you can live happier, more fulfilling lives together.

🐾 Meet the Team — Real World Canine 🐾

As part of our rebrand from the training side of Pawsitive Behaviours to Real World Canine, we thought it was the perfect time to properly re-introduce ourselves!

Hi, I’m Sophie!

I’m a trainer here at Real World Canine helping dogs and their humans navigate real life with more clarity, confidence, and a lot less stress.

Like a lot of trainers, my journey started with a dog… and not an easy one. Pebbles was my first dog, and she came with complex, deeply rooted aggressive behaviours after a rough start in life. Living with her changed everything. It pushed me to learn, to do better, and to support other owners navigating similar challenges because I know firsthand how isolating and overwhelming it can feel. That experience shaped the way I train today.

I’m an Accredited Dog Trainer through the IAABC and am currently working towards becoming a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant. I’m also Pet First Aid certified and an approved muzzle fitter. Over the years, I’ve trained alongside and learned from respected trainers both locally and internationally, continually developing my skills to provide practical, evidence-based training that actually works in the real world.

These days, I share my life with two Miniature American Shepherds, a bit of a shift from bull breeds to herding dogs! But no matter the breed, the goal is always the same: helping dogs and their people live better, more manageable lives together.

I understand what it’s like to feel limited by your dog’s behaviour but I also know there’s a way forward.

And I’d love to help you find it.
