New Zealand Miniature Hereford Breeders Group – Successful Open Day

Last weekend, the New Zealand Miniature Hereford Breeders Group held a very successful Open Day at Vandy’s farm in Te Awamutu.
Members travelled from across the regions — Hawke’s Bay, Tauranga, Wairarapa, Taranaki and Waikato — to take part.

The day included a valuable demonstration on frame scoring cows, along with great discussions on various aspects of the breed and shared advice among members.

A big thank you to Tania and Mike for hosting such an enjoyable and informative day, and to Magills Butchery for supplying the delicious Hereford steaks that Mike expertly BBQ’d for lunch.

Our host was Vandy’s Farm.

Vandy's Farm is the largest registered Miniature Hereford stud in New Zealand. Based on the outskirts of Te Awamutu. They specialise in breeding up to 30 calves each season. Some of these calves are then sold on for further breeding, with the balance finished to the standards required to meet the Hereford Prime brand where they are processed at Magills Butchery.

Mike has a foot in many camps, including Vandy's Farm, Magills Butchery and is in the process of developing an abattoir ready for operation in January. Magills Butchery has been in the Van Der Hoeven family for over 65 years and has been associated with Hereford Prime brand for 20 years.

Introducing Herberts Stud
Hi from Shirley and Phil at Herbert Herefords based in Palmerston North. It is our second year of owning these gorgeous girls. Our goal is to breed quality minis that will go on to live their lives on lifestyle properties and not to breed animals for meat.
It’s a choice and why we chose mini Herefords. Plus is that they are delightful, cute and become very attached to their ‘people’.
The support from the Hereford community and in particular the Miniature Hereford family has been outstanding.

Introducing Moolah Stud.

Moolah Miniature Hereford Stud NZ burst onto the scene in January 2025 & is situated in the heart of the beautiful Wairarapa dark sky reserve on rolling pastures. Run by Darren & Natasha Senior, we specialize in breeding Miniature Herefords with easy handling, a quiet nature, with the end goal to create a fully Homozygous Polled (PcPc) Stud. We have been extremely grateful to past & current members for setting us up with great knowledge, advice & our foundation herd. Our long-term aim is to build up our numbers to 20-25 cows in calf yearly. Our 1st year (2025) has been extremely successful with 3 PcPc Polled calves born to date, with another calf due around November. Come & join us by following our journey on Facebook. Vandy’s Farm is the largest registered Miniature Hereford Stud in New Zealand. Based on the outskirts of Te Awamutu. Specialising in breeding with up to 30 calves each season. All of our cows are well handled and enjoy human contact. These cattle are then finished to Hereford Prime standards and sold onto Magills Butchery. Also available are calves for sale. Inspection is welcome by appointment.
