Nobody teaches you how to say goodbye to a pet. So let me try.

You don't have to know the right words. Your pet doesn't need them.

What they need is familiar smells. Familiar voices. The feel of a hand they trust. The sounds of their home.

The goodbye itself takes only a few minutes. But the space around it, the hours before, the people in the room, those are yours to shape however feels right for your family.

Some families play music. Some light candles. Some just sit on the floor together. There is no wrong way.

I'll handle everything else. You just be there.

Twenty years in, and this part of my job still gets me every time.

Not in a way that makes it hard to do. In a way that reminds me why I do it.

The moment an anxious pet settles at home, in their own space, surrounded by the people they love most. The way a family's shoulders drop when they realise it can be peaceful. The quiet afterwards, when they tell me thank you.

This work asks a lot. But it gives back something I can't really put into words.
