At what cost to native and endangered birds....(from an Australian source, but the same thing happens here to our endangered birds such as the Whio (Blue duck). Is it worth potentially making them extinct? Once they are gone, they are gone forever...

What you're watching is a love story.

Duck hunting season opens in under one week.

Somewhere out there, a hunter will raise a shotgun at what they see as "just a duck." They won't see the one flying beside him. They won't see her circling, calling, waiting for him to come back.

He won't come back.

Think about the person you love most. Now imagine they just went outside — and never came home.

People think mallard ducks don't pair for life.... 10+ years of daily observation tells me they do......

That's what opening day looks like from the water. 💔

And somewhere.... a little duck waits...for her car....
Hey everyone 😊

I’ve got a slightly unusual little mission and thought I’d put it out there in case someone happens to have the right thing sitting around.

Some of you know Alice, my Paradise duck. She’s got a very strong personality and tends to form little obsessions with objects. One of her favourites is my parked 4WD — she spends ages wandering around it, sitting near it, and generally treating it like part of her world. Especially the shiny wheels. She is very invested in those wheels. (Her wings have been clipped for her own safety and shes in a fenced off paddock so she cant fly off, to what she thinks is her perfect rendezvous, with an actual car!'). However her fascination with my Pajero is now 3-4 years along, and as Im about to sell the Paj (brought a phev, thanks Donald Trump) I thought maybe Alice should have her own (non driveable!) car after so many years of adoration of my Pajero?
So this is where ya'll can maybe help....

I’m trying to find something that recreates that same “parked vehicle presence” in the paddock for her to interact with.

What I’m looking for is:
A large plastic children’s ride-on style vehicle (jeep / 4WD / SUV style is ideal). Something roughly toddler ride-on size (not small toy cars), but it does NOT need to be functional.

I do NOT need an electric motor, pedals, working steering, or batteries. (In fact a driveable car.....No! Alice would definitely attempt to drive it! (and she does not have a drivers license! 🤣)

It can be broken, incomplete, or non-working — that’s absolutely fine. What matters is that it is still structurally intact and aesthetically pleasing, especially in a way that would catch Alice’s attention.

What would be ideal:
It looks like a small 4WD or jeep-style vehicle
It is large enough for a duck to comfortably explore around
Preferably has chunky wheels, ideally with a slightly shiny or reflective look
Made of durable plastic suitable for being outdoors

If anyone has something like this sitting in a shed, knows of a cheap one on Trade Me / Marketplace, or has any leads in NZ, I’d really appreciate it.

It’s a bit unusual, but Alice has a lot of personality, and it would be genuinely lovely to see her interacting with something like this again 🦆🚙

Thanks in advance if anyone spots the right little paddock vehicle for her.
Ive attached two photos chatGPT helpfully made up for me. The first is an uncanny replica of Alice around my Paj (I have no actual photos of this as my focus at the time, every time, was to get Alice away from the car so I could go to work, grocery/feed shopping, etc). The second image is how me and ChatGPT see Alice with her new car!
