Blake - Trainer and Rider A trip to Christchurch saw an opportunity arise to purchase a section A mare and the dream has started.

BJM Equestrian has been formed between brothers 8 year old Blake and 9 year old Jayden Mouat with the goal to compete at the 2020 Horse of the Year show on Blake's new school master lease pony. Inspired by Vicki WIlson having broken in her first pony at 10 years of age Blake longed to break in a pony before he turned 10. In his younger years Jayden showed miniature horses competing very successful

ly at the 2013 NZMHA National Show. Jayden has no desire to ride but enjoys the ground work and inhand aspects of showing and is keen to get back in the ring with small ponies. Blake has been riding for 5 years and has a phenomenal drive and passion for horses. The 2016/17 season saw Blake forgo the first ridden ring and went to the hunter pony show ring. He competed well in registered level one dressage and rodeo barrel racing. As a member of Invercargill Kennington Pony Club he has started jumping and is keen to pursue a future in show jumping and eventing. This page is Blake and Jaydens story on their journey of kids producing a kids pony.

A year ago the lovely Natalie Anita DeCaro from It’s a Stitch up asked Blake to product test a jump filler. After a slight delay, testing has been done.
Made from a very sturdy PVC to withstand all conditions. This one has been outside in the rain, sun and wind.
Blake has used it for a skinny, on Jump 4 Joy NZ poles and as a Liverpool.
This can be custom made in many different size and colour options.
Highly recommend this as a great affordable option for jump fillers.

Donkey 🫏 having a wee jump school today. Blake very excited to jump 115cm high and 130cm triple bar. The kid and pony may have had a bloody long break but they still have the passion and desire to be the best they can be.

Well Blake kind of did a thing.

314 days since he last rode a horse and Crickett 468 days since she was last ridden.

A quiet wee walk and trot for about 20 minutes.

Blake has been cleared to work and study. So looking to complete his Level 3 Equine course in the next couple of months. Hopefully he can pick up some work in the next wee while as well.

Not officially cleared to ride yet but only due to a mandatory 6 month stand down due to the possibility of seizures.

Very proud Crickett was a wee legend. Mum may of had a sneaky wee tear. Dad stressed to the max lol.

Today saw the last of Blakes staples and sutures out. Now the work begins to get horses and rider fit for when he is given the green light to ride. Poor ponies don't know what they are in for. Crickett was first up tonight on the lunge.

Blake Mouat is doing so well after his latest surgery. Today he had 24 staples removed. The other 27 staples and not sure yet how many sutures will come out next week. Other than a wicked scar you wouldn't even know he has had a pretty major surgery. Blake has always been a come back kid and is doing so again. Still desperate to ride his horses but the end is getting closer. In the meantime he gets to look after 9 adorable puppies out of his purebred border collie Abby and by his heading dog Jed. Puppies are now 4 weeks old (photo of when they were 2 weeks old) and will be advertised for sale soon.

Well today was the day. 8 months and 22 days since getting sick. And 8 months and 5 days with only half a skull. Blake Mouat has had his Cranioplasty to replace his removed and infected skull.
A carbon fiber skull was imported from the USA and inserted to cover his brain.
Bounce back kid is true to form sitting up in the ICU at Mercy Hospital having pizza and chocolate torte from room service.
A scan tomorrow and one more night in Hospital then head home to recuperate.
Still looking at possibly another 6 months of recovery to go before he is completely healed.

Sitting at home reflecting on the year that is almost over. What a year 2025 turned out to be. Some lovely highs and some massive lows. Definitely not the year that was planned.

The highs were
👌Blake heading off to Telford to study for his Level 3 Equine Management qualification to be followed by his Level 4. Sadly neither were completed but hopefully he will gain his Level 3 in 2026.
👌Competing at Lake Hayes A&P for the first time with Donkey and Tui.
👌Competing and performing well at Cromwell in his first 2 day event in 8 years on two horses who had never competed.
👌Helping produce the gorgeous wee TJ in showing and jumping.
👌Taking up coaching both privately and at pony club

The lows well that would be Blake getting seriously ill with an infection in his skull and multiple blood clots resulting in having half his skull removed. The subsequent long recovery and wait for surgery only for his surgery to be canceled at the last minute due to having covid.

2025 the year that started with so much promise and turned to s**t. We would not have got through the year without the help from medical professionals, family, friends and even strangers. We thank each and every one of you who has helped Blake on his roller coaster of a life.

What will 2026 bring? Who knows, hopefully Blake will get his replacement skull early in February, hopefully his recovery time will be short.
Blake has goals and plans we just need a bit of luck to go his way for it all to fall into place.

And through the year Blake has remained positive and strong. He has helped out others where he can. So very proud of the young man Blake is, he is wise beyond his years and never gives up the fight.

So 2025 can f@%k off and looking forward to a positive 2026

7 months and 3 days after falling ill and 6 1/2 months since his last surgery. Today was the day Blake was to have reconstruction surgery to replace the half a skull that was removed during his last surgery.

Headed up to Mercy Hospital at the Crack of dawn for his admission. Blake had a snuffly nose over the weekend so a routine covid test was done.

So in true Blake style the test came back very strongly with a positive covid reading.

Positive test equals surgery canceled 😞

Pi**ed off, gutted, devastated, another kick in the guts, more dreams and goals being canceled or put back further.

Blake has been through so much in his nearly 17 years and once again he has to deal with another kick in the guts.

Surgery will now be rescheduled to early next year.

Wow 2 months since our last update very slack on my part.

Blake whilst still very limited has had a busy couple of months but first the fantastic news.

SURGERY DATE CONFIRMED
15th December at Mercy Hospital in Dunedin Blake will be having his cranioplasty to put in a new skull. This is going to be an artificial plate being sent from America. A follow up consultation 6-8 weeks after this will hopefully give him the go ahead to start resuming life to its fullest.

VOLUNTEERING
With the show jumping season started and unable to ride Blake traveled to SCNO and Otago where he spent time helping with gate duties and ring crew. He definitely has fomo but he still has his head held high and is trying to give back to help those who have helped him. Sadly due to a state of emergency in Southland the Southland Showjumping this past weekend had to be canceled.

HORSES
The ponies are pretty much hanging out in the paddock doing not much except wreck each other's covers. Roxy has the only cover fit to be worn on. Might be a spot of shopping required at Equisouth this weekend coming.
Donkey has been remeasured and will remain a pony. Sadly this would have been Blakes last year able to show jump ponies, he still he a goal to jump Donkey to mini prix by the end of the season just need a few stars to align to achieve this.
Blake is considering putting Tui on the market. As much as he would love to produce her further at the moment it isn't going to be possible. If anyone is looking for a very nice mare with talent to burn in dressage, showing and jumping, yes she does have a few quirks and requires a kind, quiet experienced rider get in touch.

SPONSORSHIP PARTNERS
Once again this season we are very honoured to be in partnership with Added Energy Ltd "The Local Experts". These guys have been doing an amazing job in the Northern Southland region helping with the horrific weather event that our region suffered last week. Our huge thanks goes out to Gary and Naomi Maclean for helping Blake stay on the road to get to events so he can give back to the communities that have helped him.

Horsempire have also very generously come back on board to support Blake not only in his riding career but also hugely in his recovery. Gaia Cristiano is one of the most beautiful kindest ladies we know. Please get in touch with her for all your horse and rider needs and definitely wants. Stocking amazing brands such as Winderen, Avacallo, Makebe, Armateq and Blakes personal favorites Suomy and Equestro. Also use the code BLAKE10 to get a 10% discount.

Once again we would like to thank everyone who has supported Blake through this tough time. Onwards and upwards with hopefully an end in site to getting back to what Blake loves doing best, riding his horses.

A couple of busy weekends for Blake last weekend saw him attending the ESNZ course designers seminar in Gore.
Today he once again traveled the 2 1/4 hours each way to help out at the final Telford Winter Showjumping Series.

Great photo of Blake with three of his coaching clients. All having an excellent day and an amazing Series.
