Dexter Evan Hall

Dexter Evan Hall What Dexter Does - The awesome adventures of a curious canine. Dexter Evan is a Tri-colour Cavalier King Charles spaniel. It was a bit of a stumbling block.

Born on 16/9/2013 to a ruby dad and a Tri-colour mum. We first saw Dexter on an NZ auction site, we weren’t really looking for a dog. We’d just finished dog-sitting a close friend’s Cavalier (called Portia) and we were feeling a bit bereft. So we were looking at all the pretty dogs on the site and ooh’ing and aah’ing. Husband and I would send each other links of dogs we liked and there’d be some c

omments on how pretty they were, then, we spotted Dexter. Until this point, it had been harmless wishful thinking, Dexter was a game changer. For the first time we seriously talked about getting another dog. Seriously discussed logistics, we’re a very outdoors family - how would it be having a dog tag along whilst we go kayaking or tramping or hunting or camping. We talked about a few trips that we already had planned and how it would affect them - made enquiries to the hotels we’d booked to see if they were dog friendly - they were not. So we decided we’d just have to cancel the bookings if we got a dog. We mulled it over for a few days and about a week later, husband came to my office for lunch. We were still talking about Dexter (I’d already named him at this point), and we discussed the fact that the only reason we hadn’t bought him was because we couldn’t go and check him out. We live in the North Island and Dexter lived in the South Island. Husband wasn’t in a rush though, so we went to my desk and did a bit of research on pets as cargo. Turns out Air NZ shipped pets nationally for a reasonable fee (cheaper than if I were to fly!) - and the flight would take 1 hour and 10 minutes. All that was left to do was to contact the breeder and see if they would be willing to fly him up. The first conversation wasn’t very long, for some crazy reason, I was really nervous. We discussed his personality, his parents, and lots of other things I can’t remember now, but the main thing was that she would be willing to fly him up. Again, the only thing holding us back was that we couldn’t see him, so I told M (names as initials to protect the innocent), that we would like to have a think about it. That evening, we spent mostly looking at pictures of Dexter on the auction site and bouncing between we can’t because we have a great life and we must because we can give him a great life. Little did I know that I was already in too deep and would have no alternative. Dexter had captured mine and husband’s heart and there was nothing else for it. Dexter Evan was joining the H family. I called M the following day to discuss payment terms, etc. made calls to the airline to check out flights and get more information and called all the hotels we’d already booked for our trips and cancelled the bookings. Then, I called other hotels that were pet friendly and booked them instead. The following day, I made the full payment for Dexter, so that was it, all sealed, just needed him delivered. That in itself was a bit of a mission as I had been given some information by the airline, that he couldn’t fly until after his 12 week vaccinations. But we were going away at the end of the week that he would be 12 weeks old. Didn’t want him to turn up on the Monday and then we go away for 5 days on the Thursday. So we arranged with M that we would fly him up when we got back 15th December 2013. Man, that felt like such a long time away. When I went to book his flights, they said I couldn’t book more than 30 days in advance. I explained why I wanted to and the lovely Air NZ lady told me they could fly from 8 weeks - that meant Dexter could possibly fly as early as the following weekend!! I contacted M (who had been sending me pictures and little notes about Dexter and what he’d been up to all this time) and explained the mix up, she was fantastic and said “Let’s fly him!”

The week that followed felt like a year as I counted down to the day that Dexter would join his forever home. Each day M would send through a picture to keep us up to date with his progress. Each day I’d fall in love a little bit more. The day finally came that Dexter was to fly, both M & I were nervous. M sent a few text messages through to let me know he was ready and safely at the air cargo terminal. I promised that I would return the favour and text as soon as he landed. The next 2 hours were the longest. I made some lunch, paced the floor, vacuumed, paced the floor. Went over to my friends house. J was awesome and kept me occupied whilst I fretted. Finally the time came to go to the airport and meet Dexter for the first time. The story from here will be in multi media format. Each video and picture you see will help to tell Dexter’s story at his forever home. Dexter - we are so pleased to meet you and so blessed to be allowed to take care of you.

These are my “best bits” from 2025, which feels fair because mostly, it was a very good year.

There were beaches (excellent), sticks (rescued bravely), muddy adventures (10/10), and walks that turned into very serious missions. I explored the world one sniff at a time, made important executive decisions (like when a stick clearly needs to come home), and occasionally required Mama and Daddy to run to keep up with me.

This year also felt a little different. It was our first Christmas without my sister Riley, and we miss her very much. I carry her with me on every adventure - I know she’d approve.

Thank you for following along, cheering me on, and sharing my joy. I hope the New Year brings you fresh air, good company, happy moments, and something you love enough to carry proudly all the way back to the car.

Here’s to more adventures in 2026. 💙

Love,
Dexter 🐶✨

Last night I bravely rescued a stick from the ocean at Tapuae Beach.

At first, I returned it near the water. Sensible. Professional.

Then I moved it a bit further away… just in case.

Then a bit further again…

And then I decided this stick was clearly coming home.

So, off I went, full steam ahead! stick firmly in mouth, heading for the car. Mama and Daddy had to almost run to keep up, which I allowed, provided they didn’t fall behind. I did pause occasionally to check they were still with me. I am responsible like that.

The stick is now safe.

Another successful rescue.

Another addition to my garden collection.

Love,

Dexter 🐶🌊🪵

🎅🐾 Merry Christmas 🐾🎅

Apparently it’s Christmas, which means I had to sit very still while wearing a Santa hat and pretending this was my idea.

There are lights everywhere, the house smells amazing, and everything feels familiar… but also a little different. This is our first Christmas without my sister Riley, and we miss her very much. She should be here, keeping an eye on things and making sure everything is done properly.

We’re holding her close in our hearts, along with all the love she left behind. Christmas looks a bit different this year - but it’s still full of warmth, memories, and togetherness. 💙

I hope your festive season is full of warmth, good company, and somewhere soft to nap after lunch. 💙

Love,
Dexter 🎄✨

🌿🐾 Then & Now 🐾🌿

On the left, I’m 6 months old, tiny, fluffy, full of mischief, and already convinced that sitting in long grass made me invisible.

On the right, I’m 12 years old, older, wiser, much fluffier… and still sitting in long grass because it’s my favourite place in the whole world.

A lot has changed in 11 1/2 years, but some things haven’t changed at all:

I still love my adventures, I still love my family, and I still love finding the perfect patch of grass to plonk myself in. 💙🌱

Here’s to growing up… and staying exactly the same where it matters most. 🐾✨

🌿🐾 Tapuae Adventure! 🐾🌿

Today Daddy and I did the walk from the Tapuae car park down through the grass and bush, following the stream all the way to the sea. It’s one of my favourite walks — all sniffy and green and shady. I was trotting along like the happiest boy in the world. 💙

And then… the track opened up and BOOM — the whole beach right in front of me! Sand, water, space, smells… paradise! I ran (well, plodded) straight for it with my tail going a million miles an hour.

Tapuae days are the best days. 🐶✨

Today Mama, Daddy and I went to Tongaporutu, home of Elephant Rock and the Three Sisters. The rocks are only accessible at low tide, so we had to wade through the river to get there — Daddy even had to carry me across like the prince I am. 👑

I was very excited… and then I discovered the mud. SO much glorious, squishy, slippery mud. 😎

My front feet got stuck in the sticky mud and I face-planted (10/10, would absolutely do again). I got so muddy that we had to go to the next beach over — a sandy one — just to wash me off!

Mama got soaked trying to rescue her dignity. Daddy full-on fell over and landed on his butt. It was magnificent.

We were all muddy, wet, laughing, and having the BEST time.

Adventures are always fun, but muddy adventures are the very best of all. 💙

Today I had to walk the length of the pool on special underwater tables. At first, I wasn’t too sure about the whole idea - wet paws, strange floor, and all that. But then I saw the liver treats. Game on. 😎

Once I figured out there were snacks involved, I powered from one end to the other like a pro. When my trainer didn’t hand over the treats quickly enough, I yelled to remind her - just so she didn’t forget who’s boss. 😉

By the end, Daddy said I looked like I’d been doing it my whole life. Not bad for an old boy, right? 💙

😴🐾 The sound of pure relaxation. 💤

I’d had my physio session earlier, so I earned this nap fair and square. Mama says I sound like a freight train rumbling through the lounge - I say I’m just living my best snore life.

Sweet dreams, big snores, and zero regrets. 💙

💆‍♂️🐾 Physio day! 🐾💆‍♂️

No pool this time - just me, my comfy bed, and Melissa working her magic. She stretched my legs, massaged my hips, and told me I’m a very good boy (I already knew that 😉).

Mama sat close with yoghurt treats and lots of encouragement while I did my best to stay relaxed - I might have even dozed off once or twice.

Getting older isn’t always easy, but days like this make me feel so much better. 💙
