That’s a wrap! Week 5 of our Small Group Basic Obedience 🐾

OD, Maisie and Maggie finished their final session today, and all three did fantastic! 👏

It’s great to see their owners putting in the work and following through with their homework. That consistency is what makes the difference.

Remember, clarity is key. You might feel I’m nitpicking at times, but there’s a reason for it. What you say to your dog matters, and following through consistently ensures your dog understands what’s being asked of them. We don’t want to muddy the waters or create confusion. We want to make it clear and fair for the dog.

Keep up the good work, keep practising, and most importantly, don’t forget to have fun with your dogs!

Keep building that relationship through productive play, clear communication and quality time together. Training isn’t just about obedience. It’s about developing a relationship where your dog wants to engage and work with you.

I look forward to seeing you all again soon for our environmental and obstacle sessions. Keep up the great work! 🙌🐕

Class 4 - Sunday mornings are for the dogs. OD (XL Bully) Maggie (Retriever) & Maisie (Hairy McCleary) and their humans are doing great in the small group basic obedience course. Looking forward to seeing you all this Sunday!

Who’s chasing whom? They keep switching roles.

He chases her, then she turns around and chases him.

She gets the stick, he grabs it. He runs, she follows. Then they swap again.

Just two young dogs running, chasing, grabbing, and having fun together — naturally taking turns as they go.

Both off leash in the open field.

Zenni — 7 months
Finn — 13 months

I only allow Zenni to spend this kind of time with another dog if that dog is going to be part of our lives. Dogs don’t need to play with every dog they meet. More importantly, they need to learn how to be neutral and calm around other dogs.

We let them enjoy the play, but step in before they get overtired or too wired.

🐾 Happy Friday 🐾

A little snapshot of a busy week—big personalities, socialising, training, a stop at Animates, a cappuccino at Hunger Monger, John aka MondayPainter MondayPainter stopping by The Strength Room with Henri Rottie, and even a workout at my husband’s personal training studio, The Strength Room NZ in Havelock North! 😂💪🏼🐾

Dog training isn’t just about obedience drills—it’s about building relationships, creating good habits and helping dogs navigate the real world. That includes learning how to behave in pet shops, cafés and even around the gym!

There’s always plenty of dog hair, muddy paws, coffee and laughs along the way. ❤️🐾

A few pics from last Sunday’s first small group basic obedience class 🐾

We had a great mix of dogs, Maggie the Golden Retriever, little Maisie the Hairy Maclary, our little terrier and OD, the XL Bully.

And the humans were fantastic. Everyone was engaged, listened, asked questions and really put the work in with their dogs. That makes such a difference.

Zenni joined us about a quarter of the way through the class, mainly to observe and take everything in. She also helped me demonstrate the come command, showing why I like to teach the end position first, rather than just having the dog run towards you and then fly straight past!

A really great first class with a great group of dogs and their humans. 🐾

💭 Ever wondered what your puppy dreams about?

After a big morning of play, exploring and environmental training, Zenni finally crashed… and this is what happened. 💤

Those little twitches, paw movements and facial expressions are signs she’s entered REM sleep, the stage of sleep where dreaming is most likely to occur.

For puppies, sleep isn’t just about resting. Their brains are processing all those new experiences, learning and information from their day.

So while Zenni might look like she’s completely out of it… her little brain could be busy replaying her adventures. 🐾💭
