This is what NOT desexing your pet looks like.

This tiny kitten and his sibling arrived into our care early last week - not only was he cold and wet, he was sick, underweight, and covered in fleas. The two of them had been found out in the bush, and they must have been out there during the 3 days of torrential rain that we had just had prior.

We have named him Nemo and he is now being fostered by a staff member. Unfortunately his sibling was too far gone, and the only thing we could do was to help that one peacefully pass over 🌈 💔

This situation was entirely preventable.

We have been inundated with dumped/found kittens for the past 8 months. And puppies? It’s even worse. We are getting calls every day from Northlanders with unwanted litters of pups.

Please help us break the cycle, by getting ALL your pets desexed. It is the kindest and most responsible thing a pet owner can do - it prevents suffering before these unwanted animals are born. Even if your cat or dog is already pregnant, they can likely still be desexed now and prevent their next litter.

Contact our centre now for your FREE desexing voucher, the surgery is then done at a local vet clinic closest to you (we have a list for you to choose from). Call us on 09 407 7515 within our opening hours, and the voucher will be emailed to you.

Please share this information all over the Far North; we know many people are not on social media.

In the meantime, little Nemo is getting huge amounts of TLC - he is a very lucky kitty.

Dog owners! Do you need advice on trimming your pet's nails? 🐕️ We know it can sometimes be a daunting task, and many dogs (and owners!) are nervous when it comes to getting this done.

We've created a helpful guide explaining how to know if your dog's nails need trimming, important things to be aware of, and when to seek veterinary advice ❤️ Understanding the anatomy of the dog's nail is crucial in ensuring you can do this safely (avoiding the inner 'quick'), while keeping your dog happy and healthy.

Check out the detailed guide on our website, and please share this to help other dog owners in the community: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/trimming-your-dogs-nails

🚀 Meet Rocket & Ramen 🍜

Rocket and Ramen have been patiently waiting for their forever home for quite some time, and while they may not be the first cats to rush up and introduce themselves, they just might be the most rewarding.

These sweet sisters arrived back in February, with their mother and siblings. They have been continuously overlooked due to their initial shyness with new people, and after spending so long together in care now, they’ve formed a special bond and need a home where they can stay side by side.

Ramen is the braver of the two, often leading the way and showing Rocket that new people and new experiences aren’t so scary after all. Rocket prefers to take things at her own pace, but with Ramen by her side, her confidence continues to grow.

They may be shy at first, but underneath those cautious exteriors are two gentle girls looking for a family willing to give them the time and patience they deserve. Watching them blossom and seeing their trust grow will be a truly rewarding experience. We offer 15% off both their adoption fees when two animals are adopted together.

If you’ve got room in your heart and home for a pair of overlooked sisters who deserve their happy ending, Rocket and Ramen are ready to launch into their next adventure together. 💕🐾

We love getting your updates!

Waffle had her 2nd birthday recently, so her adoptive parents sent us this lovely video.

Waffle was our longest staying dog at the time she was adopted (July last year) and she was chosen to be a companion for the gorgeous Magnus, who they had previously adopted. Magnus was also our longest staying dog at the time of his adoption.

Even though both dogs had to wait quite a while, it was obviously worth it!

They are both absolutely living their best lives 🥹👏

Our followers might remember our D pups, who arrived back in March when they were only 3-4 days old. They have been growing up in wonderful foster homes and they are now ready for adoption! 🐾 🐾

Five puppies, five wildly different personalities, and approximately zero respect for personal space:

💖 Dulce – the brains and the beauty. She’s clever, gorgeous, and already knows she could probably run the household better than you.
🌭 Dijon – the smallest male pup in the litter, but absolutely convinced he’s a Great Dane. Smaller in size, huge in heart, spirit, and determination.
🪵 Dipstick – sweet, loyal, loving… and perhaps not burdened by an overwhelming amount of intelligence. The lights are on, but nobody’s home, and honestly? It just makes him more adorable. Dipstick has grown up with 3 cats, so occasionally he forgets he is a dog.
🌸 Dahlia – the smallest of the bunch, but totally convinced she’s in charge. Confident, and ready to be everyone’s best friend within seconds of meeting them. She also grew up with 3 cats, which explains why she likes to judge you from across the room.
🚛 Chonky Dave – the biggest pup in the litter and growing at an alarming rate. Happy and friendly, we think he will grow to be the size of a small truck. He will be a gorgeous, goofy and loving truck though. Excellent cuddle value, questionable lap dog potential.

Please visit our website for more information about them:

Are you organised, and passionate about helping animals? Then we need YOU! 🙏

SPCA’s annual street appeal, Fill the Bucket, will take place across Aotearoa again this year on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, and we’re beginning our search for Volunteer Area Coordinators.

Funds raised from this appeal help us continue our vital work to save the lives of thousands of animals each year ❤️ You can join the amazing community of supporters by becoming a Volunteer Area Coordinator in your region. You can do this independently, or join up with a friend and double the fun!

We’re looking for people who can take on a leading role, be a friendly face for the volunteer street collectors, attend a training session beforehand, and commit to the two full days in October. Keen to be a part of the team? 🐱🐶 Email us at [email protected].
