Wild Horse Project

Wild Horse Project Taming New Zealand's wild horses since 2010 and now a registered charity. The Wild Horse Project is a registered Charity – CC61637.

Since 2010, The Wild Horse Project has been dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and education surrounding wild horses. The Wild Horse Projects kaupapa is to manage the horses in the Far North of Aotearoa New Zealand, in a sustainable way. There are estimated to be around 2,000 horses the length of Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe/Ninety Mile Beach, the adjacent forestry, public and private properties. With r

egular, approved, mustering by The Wild Horse Project, the taming and rehoming of the younger horses ensures the natural food and water supply can support the herd for generations to come. Founder Chloe Philips-Harris is an expert trainer and teacher of bringing horses from the wild into domesticity. We would be very grateful for any donations to help these amazing horses. It’s been just amazing to come to the South Island and catch up with some of the people from previous wild horse workshops. As well as some of our lovely Northland wild horses that are already down.

I feel so responsible for what happens to these animals after they’re mustered as I have such a big part in taking them from the wild. Therefore I was so touched and thrilled to get this beautiful update about one of our fillies from a few years ago.

All I ever want is for the horses to be loved and she clearly has been and gone on to absolutely thrive with all the care and time put into her.

I thought all those people who were interested in Feather might like to continue following her journey now she’s in the South Island with a wonderful family.

They are going to be documenting the process on her very own page so make sure you click and follow to see all this special pony is up too.

Some very tired baby wild horses are having a much needed day off in Christchurch before the final leg of the journey to their new homes.

They have been absolutely amazing travelling also the entire length of the north island, half the South Island and encountering so many new experiences along the way.

Nothing has bothered them and despite loading and unloading in the dark, meeting pigs, sheep, goats and domestic horses in the places they’ve stayed, they’ve handled it all very confidently.

Lovely to see Freesia and Feather having a much needed lie down and nap this afternoon.

We found Feather the Foal a home, can we do the same for Mac? There’s still one spot on the trailer heading South!

This friendly guy was born with us, out of a wild mare called Molly. He is 18 months old and the biggest and chunkiest wild horse we have and should easily mature over 15hh. So for all those holding out for bigger horses now is your chance.

Mac is the friendliest most easy going character. Always happy to see you. Easy to handle, fence trained, halter trained and a dream in every way.

He’ll mature into a fantastic all round type, I can see him being an amazing trekking, hunter, dressage or show hunter horse. Comes from a group of wild horses known to be athletic, sensible and sturdy.

Who can offer this boy an amazing home?

Well it’s been a big week here alright!

Lots of planning and prepping for the South Island. Plus we got Ghost successfully castrated. This stallion has only been handled for two weeks and he’s doing amazing ticking all milestones.

Yesterday for castration there were no tricks, no crush, the vet was able to walk in and sedate him like a normal horse. A lot of work goes in behind the scene to make things like this go smoothly. So the horse has a good experience and so does the vet!

The young horses are all coming along nicely. With milestones reached everyday.

However you might be feeling like you’re seeing double with the photos. Because some of our mares are also doing amazing. With young Freida and Harriet both getting their starts under saddle!

This little girl was coming to the South Island but her home has fallen through at the last moment. With us leaving next week and already having her prepped, plus space on the the trailer, we’d love to find her a new home down there. She’s so special and ready to go on and be loved.

She’s approx 8 months, going to be a larger type maybe 14.2hh - 15hh and is very intelligent had a real look at me personality and a big floaty trot.

She’s now up to date on worming, picks up her fee , knows basic haltering and handling and ready to be loved and have some attention put into her.

Who here could offer her a home?

There doesn’t seem to be a spare second to catch your breath at the moment with so many wild horses to get ready for new adventures.

Luckily these two mares have both finished the basic handling and are getting a week of turnout on grass before their big South Island road trip. All our helpers are falling in love with the these special horses and it’s not hard to see why.

Quite often we have horses come in very skinny, it’s a big job putting weight on them. Though this year they’ve come in better condition that most. However knowing that they will have a big road trip next week it’s really important they continue to gain as much weight, safely and healthy as possible.

Luckily we have a nice paddock full of rough grass for them to feast on at our grazing block. Perfect for the wildies as it’s more grass than they’ve ever seen but rough pasture species so easy for their guts to adjust too. That along with some hard feed they are always on changes and has them looking great in no time!

Alright this time next week I’ll be heading to the South Island with a trailer load of our gorgeous northland wild horses. I still have room for one more though! Faith and Mac are yet to find their next homes and are the loveliest kindest types for those looking for their next best friend. Do you have room in your paddock?

Recently 3 of our wild horses took a big road trip, so they could meet their new owners. We used a friend’s wonderful facilities to spend the night and do the handover. The wild boys were all perfectly behaved and such phenomenal ambassadors for their breed. Just another calm day for them. The only problem being that everything was sized for giant warmbloods not little wild yearlings. Seeing over the railings proved the most challenging part!
