Does this look like a girl who just had a long anaesthetic? 👅🐾

Meet Fran, our gorgeous Frenchie! She came in for a big dental with several extractions. Despite a long anaesthetic, she was bright, nosy and full of kisses by discharge time, thanks to careful planning before, during and after her procedure 💙

Why Frenchies need extra care 😴
French bulldogs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed. Those squishy faces come with narrow nostrils, a long soft palate and smaller airways, so breathing can be harder under sedation and while waking up. Brachys are also more prone to regurgitation and reflux.

How we prepare our brachy patients 🩺
✨ A thorough pre-anaesthetic check
✨ Anti-nausea and anti-reflux medication before surgery
✨ Calm, gentle handling to keep stress and breathing effort low
✨ Oxygen before induction and a quick, smooth intubation
✨ Continuous monitoring of oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing throughout

Recovery is where the real watching happens 👀
Brachys are most vulnerable as they wake up. We keep their breathing tube in as long as it’s safe, keep them propped up and cool, and never leave them unwatched.

Fran had some trouble breathing as she woke up from her dental, so our team quickly put her back on oxygen. She responded beautifully, made a speedy recovery and went home happy and comfy, ready for some well-earned cuddles 🥰

Meet Marianella: Head Nurse 🦸‍♀️🐾

Happy Vet Nurse Awareness Week! Today we’re celebrating our amazing Head Nurse, Marianella, who brought her skills (and her sunshine ☀️) all the way from Santiago, Chile 🇨🇱
Here’s a quick look at her CV, which reads like several people’s careers rolled into one:

🐴 Vet nurse to racehorses in Chile
💆‍♀️ Certified massage therapist
🏦 Bank teller (with a certificate in spotting money laundering, so don’t even think about it)
🏪 Convenience store owner
🧁 Baker with her own online business
🚵‍♀️ Downhill mountain biker and bike mechanic
🩺 Fully qualified vet, after studying at night school on a scholarship.

After working overnight emergency shifts in Chile, she moved to New Zealand and worked in the ER and ICU teams at VSA and ARC. Now she’s here, keeping our patients (and the rest of us) in line 😄

So what does a qualified vet love most about nursing? Critical care, anaesthetics, emergencies and getting to know hospitalised patients. Her secret favourite is wound care. Yes, the gooey stuff. She says nothing beats watching a patient heal a little more every day 💙

💙 It’s Veterinary Nurse Awareness Week! 💙

Vet nurses are the heart of every clinic. They’re the ones holding paws during procedures, monitoring patients through surgery and recovery, comforting nervous pets (and their humans!), and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. This week is all about raising awareness of the vital role vet nurses play, and recognising the skill, compassion and dedication they bring every single day. 🩺🐾

Our team here at Howick Village Vets may be small, but it’s mighty! This week we’re shining a spotlight on our wonderful nurses, starting with…

✨ Meet Steph, our Surgical Nurse! ✨

Steph has been working with dogs since she was 15, and that early passion has grown into a career devoted to animal care. She’s built extensive experience across cattery, clinic and practice settings, and even founded her own dog walking business, giving her a real understanding of canine behaviour beyond the clinic walls. 🐕

Steph also leads our Puppy School, helping new owners and their pups build good habits and get off to the best possible start together. 🐶🎓What she loves most about her job is building relationships with patients and their owners. Her calm, friendly manner puts every pet and person at ease.

At home, Steph is a busy mum of two and shares her house with two dogs, a cat, two axolotls and a thriving collection of fish! 🐟 Weekends are spent cheering on her kids at sport and enjoying family time.

Meet Teddy 🧡

Teddy is a gorgeous two year old boy cat. A lovely local family had been keeping an eye on this stray for over a week. They noticed he was moving strangely and that his coat looked badly matted. Last night they managed to catch him, and they brought him in as soon as we opened this morning.

When we examined him, we found a large amount of his coat stuck together with glue, including his belly, under his armpits and across his lower back. Big tufts of fur had been pulled out where the glue tugged at his skin every time he moved. Sadly, it looks like Teddy may have been the victim of a cruel prank. 💔

His treatment took 1.5 hours. What did we do?
🫒 We gently massaged canola oil through his coat to break down the glue
🧴 We washed the oil out with detergent
💧 We rinsed him several times with warm water
🔥 We did all of this in a small heated room so his body temperature wouldn’t drop

After everything he’d been through, Teddy was SO patient and loving the whole time. He sat quietly and let us work, and it honestly blew us away. 🥹

Teddy’s skin was very inflamed where the fur was pulled out, so he’s gone home on antibiotics to help it heal.

A huge thank you to the kind family who noticed Teddy, didn’t give up on catching him, got him the help he needed and will be giving him the home he deserves🙏

They wanted to share his story to help people understand what an animal goes through to recover from what might seem a harmless substance.

🎓🐾 PUPPY SCHOOL GRADUATION! 🐾🎓

Our gorgeous September Puppy School pups graduated tonight! 🥳🐶 And just look at these little graduates in their caps… how adorable are they?! 😍🎓

As part of graduation, each pup got to show off a special trick they’ve been working on:

🐾 Bruce showed us his impressive “leave it” 👏
🐾 Penny proudly demonstrated her shake 🤝
🐾 Daisy showed off her fetch AND return skills 🎾
🐾 Jumbo absolutely nailed his sit pretty 🥰

Four weeks of learning, socialising, building confidence, practising good manners and, of course, having plenty of fun! ❤️

We are SO proud of every one of them and their wonderful families. Watching these puppies grow and develop over the four weeks has been such a joy. 🥹🐾

Congratulations, Bruce, Penny, Daisy & Jumbo! 🎓🎉

🦷😂 Things you hear at a vet clinic that sound VERY questionable out of context…

We’ve had an above average number of dentals lately, which means there has been a LOT of:

“Can you pass me the tampons?”
“Where are the tampons?”
“We need more tampons!” 😂

For the record, the technical term is oropharyngeal swabs, used during dentals to soak up water and fluids from the mouth.

But honestly… nobody here calls them that.

They’re TAMPONS. 🤣

🎓🐾 From first-day nerves to proud puppy graduates! 🐾🎓

Tonight, Howick Village Vets was filled with wagging tails, curious noses and plenty of puppy pride as our gorgeous Puppy School class graduated! 🥹🐶💚

Over the past four weeks, we’ve loved watching these little ones grow in confidence, learn new skills and build positive relationships with the world around them — all under the patient and caring guidance of our wonderful Puppy School Coordinator, Steph. 👏✨

Puppy School is about so much more than learning to sit and stay. It’s a chance for puppies to learn how to socialise, communicate, build confidence and become more aware of other dogs and animals. It also gives owners the tools to understand their puppy’s body language, recognise their signals and support them as they grow. 🐾

Over the four weeks, our puppies worked on:

🐶 Socialisation and confidence
🐾 Reading puppy body language and signals
👀 Awareness of other dogs and animals
🧠 Basic commands and good manners
❤️ Helping owners better understand and communicate with their puppies

And judging by the final clip in our reel, one little graduate had such a wonderful time that they simply weren’t ready to go home! 😂🥹 It seems the clinic had become their second home. We’ll happily take that as a five-star review Pluto! ⭐️🐾

🎓 Congratulations to all our Puppy School graduates! We’re so proud of how far you’ve come and can’t wait to see you continue to grow.
