Hybrid vigour. You have probably heard the term. But do you know what it is actually worth in dollars and kilograms?

By definition, hybrid vigour is the production advantage you get from crossing genetically diverse breeds, over what you would expect from two purebred lines. And the data behind it is hard to ignore.

23.3% more calf weight weaned per cow. That is what happens when crossbred dams rear crossbred calves compared to straight bred cows rearing straight bred calves.

I reckon it’s pretty hard to argue with that.

That is the free lunch of crossbreeding. Question is: are you taking it?
