Breeding season is nearly here, and our team at Maverick Repro couldn’t be more excited to get stuck in and see all the foals to come!

Maverick Repro is led by Dr Sophie Burling, a Grand Prix showjumper turned breeder, with a PhD in biochemistry and a research and innovation background spanning genetics, molecular and cell biology, stem cells, disease modelling, drug discovery and tissue engineering.

We bring deep scientific experience together with practical, calm horsemanship, and we especially enjoy the tricky mares that need a little more thought and problem solving to get in foal.
We offer chilled and frozen AI, embryo transfer, and a small number of foaling-down spaces, all with genuine one-on-one attention.

We’re breeders too, and we know how quickly costs can stack up when things don’t go perfectly first time.

Breeding is always a bit of a gamble, and too often the mare owner carries all of it. We do everything we can to make the process straightforward, keep costs predictable, and give your mare the best chance possible.

Frozen semen can feel daunting, especially if you haven’t used it before, so we’re happy to help with the whole process. From choosing a stallion, ordering semen and organising logistics, right through to managing your mare, insemination and pregnancy checks, you don’t have to work it all out alone.

𝙒𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙤 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙣-𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚 Crynz 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣. We’ll have a select number of stallions held here on the property, available on pay-on-confirmed-pregnancy terms and with no shipping fees!

We also do our best to organise shared tanks throughout the season, so mare owners can split freight and storage costs and make accessing frozen semen a little easier.

Breeding season is nearly here, and we couldn't be more excited for the mares booked in and the foals to come! Thank you to every mare owner who trusted us last season. We can't wait to see what this year brings.

We're now taking bookings for the season ahead, and we'd love to help you plan your next foal.

🧬 If you haven't worked with us before, here's what makes Maverick different: Led by Dr Sophie Burling (PhD Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular & Cell Biology), a Grand Prix showjumper turned breeder and a human medical researcher specialising in stem cells, disease modelling and tissue engineering. It's a rare mix, and it means we bring deep scientific expertise together with calm, competent horsemanship, especially with the tricky mares that are a challenge to get in foal. We offer chilled and frozen AI, embryo transfer, and a small number of foaling down spaces, all with genuine one-on-one attention.

We share the risk, because we're breeders too:

Breeding is a gamble, and too often the mare owner carries all of it. We do everything we can to support our breeders and reduce the risk, because we're breeders ourselves.

❄️ Our specialty is frozen AI. It can feel daunting, so we walk you through the whole process, from stallion selection to ordering and logistics, right through to getting your mare in foal and beyond. You don't have to work any of it out alone.

We also will have an on-site Crynz satellite tank this season! We're proud to partner with Crynz, with a tank here on the property holding a select number of stallions ready and available, on pay-on-confirmed-pregnancy terms and with no shipping fees. We also do our best to organise shared tanks throughout the season, so multiple mare owners split the freight and storage and everyone keeps costs down.

The dam Con Balu, is a daughter of the prolific broodmare Baluna van het Appelsvoordehof, who was the winner of her 3yo mare free jumping test in Belgium before her import to Australia, where she produced a large number of successful jumping horses and breeding fillies for Oaks Sport Horses. Con Balu also has strong sports connections in her dam line, and her grand dam Kaluna produced Aluna, who was also a member of the Belgian team at the European Championships in Windsor, the Belgian Champion and the Nations Cup team in La Baule, Aachen, and Falsterbo. Aluna produced the mother (Eluna d'Eclipse) of the exceptional sport and breeding stallion Luigi d'Eclipse, who won at 1.60m Grand Prix level under Michael van der Vleuten. Luigi d'Ecplise now jumps under the NZ flag with rider Uma O'Neill. A huge asset for sport or breeding. Available on weaning in autumn 2025.

What an outstanding tall and strong filly!
CHÈRIE LUNA MSH ⭐️

Coming from a very special dam line, Luna’s mother, Con Balu, is a daughter of the prolific broodmare Baluna van het Appelsvoordehof, who was the winner of her 3yo mare free jumping test in Belgium before her import to Australia, where she produced a large number of successful jumping horses and breeding fillies for Oaks Sport Horses. Zeus and Furioso II in the dam line bring value as a breeding mare. Zeus was an excellent sire of broodmares, the most notable example being Tinka's Boy.

A great article about the Belgian origins of one of our super mares, Frangipanne de Toxandria. Bred by Werner Dierckx at de Toxandria, Fran is the maternal grandmother of the 1.60m jumper Nasa de Toxandria and has many other successful relations from the same mare family, including Tobasco de Toxandria Z, L'Artiste de Toxandria, and Medoc de Toxandria - a strong performance pedigree! Flying Fran herself jumped Grand Prixs internationally, including at Spruce Meadows. I was her groom in North America, so we have plenty of history together overseas. A full circle that she as ended up in my paddock back in NZ all these years later.
