BOO! Did someone say EMERGENCY?

Things that go bump in the night aren’t always ghosts… sometimes they’re our four-legged friends getting themselves into mischief!

With Halloween fast approaching let’s keep the frights fun and the emergencies to a minimum!

🎃 Chocolate & lollies – Keep the treats for the humans!

👻 Costumes – Cute, but not every pet enjoys dressing up. Keep things comfortable and stress-free.

🕷️ Decorations– Fake cobwebs, tinsel and ribbons can be tempting to eat for curious pets.

🐈‍⬛ Spooky visitors – Trick or treaters and unexpected noises can be frightening for some pets. Give them somewhere quiet and safe to relax.

And if your pet does get into something a little too spooky… you can call us on 03 4777 233

A real Dunner Stunner today ! 🌡️☀️

So as Dunedin starts to warm up, we thought we’d help you identify the not so fun times of summer 🌞

Heatstroke in animals can happen quickly and can be life threatening, so below are some things to look out for..

• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Heavy drooling
• Bright red or unusually pale gums
• Weakness, wobbliness or collapse
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Seizures in severe cases

Some dogs are at higher risk, including brachycephalic breeds, overweight and older dogs.

Here is also a timely reminder to never leave your dog in a parked car, even if the weather doesn’t feel particularly hot or the windows are open. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, and dogs can become dangerously overheated in a very short time 🚗

If you notice signs of heatstroke, seek urgent veterinary attention immediately. !

Be prepared this summer! Know where your nearest emergency vet clinic is before an emergency happens.

🐾

Keep cool, Dunedin!

IT’S VET NURSE WEEK! 🩺

This week we’re celebrating the incredible veterinary nurses who help keep Dunedin Emergency Vet Clinic running - often behind the scenes and always the calm in the chaos.

Vet nursing is so much more than cuddling puppies and kittens (although we definitely take that job seriously too!).

Our nurses are involved in:
🩸 Taking bloods & running laboratory tests
💉 Placing IV catheters & administering medications
🫀 Monitoring critically ill patients
🩺 Assisting with emergency procedures & surgery
🩹 Wound care & bandaging
🫁 Oxygen therapy & intensive nursing care
📞 Triage & communicating with worried owners
🧸 And making sure our patients feel as safe and comfortable as possible.

Emergency nursing can be messy, exhausting, emotional and unpredictable, but we wouldn’t have it any other way

Happy Vet Nurse Week to all the amazing vet nurses out there! 🩺🐾

Stay tuned for some behind the scenes insight later in the week.

And if you have a nurse in your life give them some love below

🐾 HOPSCOTCH’S HAPPY ENDING 🐾

Back in December, we met a tiny stray kitten with a very big problem. His front leg was almost three times its normal size.

X-rays showed no obvious fracture, but his leg remained severely swollen despite pain relief and antibiotics. There were concerns about nerve damage and amputation was even a possibility.

Because it was Christmas, one of our team members took him home… and by the following week he had found his forever home. ❤️

We named him Hopscotch because he spent his days hopping around the clinic while his leg recovered. After some much needed TLC from our wonderful nurse and new owner Brit, the swelling miraculously disappeared and his leg became fully functional!

A follow up appointment at our friends at Vets on Balmac confirmed his leg was completely back to normal.. and even better a routine blood screen showed he now has the potential to become a lifesaving blood donor 🩸

From a tiny, frosty looking kitten with an uncertain future to a big handsome boy with normal limb function who now has a chance to help save other cats - we couldn’t be prouder of our Hopscotch. 🥰🐾

🌊🐾 A Seaweed Surprise! 🐾🌊

You never quite know what our patients are going to get themselves into!

Dexter the dog came into the clinic after developing signs of a foreign body. Surgery revealed an unexpected culprit — a large amount of seaweed! 🌊

After a successful surgery and some well-deserved recovery time, we were so happy to have Dexter and his parents come back to the clinic to say thank you 🍫 💐

Seeing our patients back on their feet, wagging their tails and feeling like themselves again is one of the best parts of what we do.

A big reminder for all those beach-loving pups out there… what goes in must come out… but unfortunately, sometimes it needs a little help! 😅

It was nice to see you feeling fantastic again Dexter! 🐾
