Second session with Pippa today. Her Mum has been diligently soaking her left forepaw (the one with a corn) in epsom salt solution twice daily and driving her to a grassy park for exercise. Pippa relaxed easily today into our session (she's also laying upon a PEMF mat for passive therapy in addition to her laser). She has compensatory muscle tension thanks to her limp from the corn. A good session and Pippa is already a pro!

The countdown is on for the 4 Paws Marathon. Everyone receives a finisher's medal and, each year, new dogs are featured on the medals. Meet Stella, she's a regular at our massage tent each year. You'll see her on the 5 km medal this year. Stella says, "Hey there, I’m Stella! I’ve participated in ALL the 4 Paws Marathons so far and I’ve done them with my four-legged best friend Tonka, an English Bulldog X. This is just one of our many, many adventures we share! We’re practically two peas in a pod! I started with the 16km, then the 10km, and over the years I’ve gradually reduced distances. Now I’m doing the good old 5km due to age and health catching up with me. Don’t let my age fool you though! I can still run whenever I want and love giving my working dog brothers and sisters a good run for their money. My mom says my traits include stubbornness, being a couch potato, goofiness, loyalty, clinginess, affection, and gentleness. I’m her protector, refusing to let her use the bathroom alone. My tail wags are also legendary and I can even rotate it like a propeller. If you see us on race day, don’t be shy, come over and say hi! P.S. I can’t wait for our couples massage after the race."

Good morning, Christchurch! Sox and I have enjoyed some great sunrises on morning walks over the last couple of weeks. Daylight savings time is coming at the end of the month - now is a great time to develop a new habit. Morning walks are the absolute best time for dog walking in the hot summer months. If you are not walking in the morning already, try setting your alarm 20-30 minutes earlier and give you and your dog the gift of a morning walk for enrichment and fitness.

Mac (Macaroni) and his Mum have been very diligent with his exercises and he's moving much more freely, as seen in this video from yesterday. I gave him a full body massage with laser and PEMF so he is agility-ready today at Mandeville. I have found that the most effective pre-event massage for sports dogs is the day prior to competition. This gives the dog the chance to relax and sleep well, plus their body has time to process and remove lactic acid.

Welcome to The Balanced Dog, Pippa! Poor Pippa has been intermittently lame since April and I found what appears to be a corn on her left forepaw. I released muscle tension through her traps and triceps, lasered her toes and paw pads, and recommended an Epsom salt soak for her foot. I'll see her again next week to do more with her sore muscles and to review progress. Notes have been sent to her vet for review, too.

Back in July, I posted that I had tested Sox for the gene that is linked to delayed post-operative hemorrhage - a deadly disorder found most commonly in greyhounds and other sight hound breeds. I am glad I did. He came back as a carrier/at-risk dog with one copy of the delayed postoperative hemorrhage mutation. These results are now on file with his vet, Sara at West Vet, should he require surgery. This test is easy to do at home with a cheek swab. Follow link in comments.
