Not every dog needs to be off lead to have fun!
Maggie & Bear are our Wednesday regulars, and while Bear can enjoy some off-lead time, Maggie stays on lead because her recall isn’t reliable enough yet.
And that’s completely okay! 💜
A few things worth remembering:
• Recall isn’t automatic. It takes consistent training and practice, and some dogs simply aren’t ready for reliable off-lead freedom yet.
• A lead is a safety tool. It helps prevent dogs from running onto roads, approaching unfamiliar dogs or people, chasing wildlife, or getting lost.
• Being on lead doesn’t mean being bored. Dogs can still sniff, explore, investigate their surroundings, practise calm walking and get plenty of physical and mental enrichment while on lead.
• Sniffing is enrichment! Allowing dogs time to stop and investigate different smells gives them an opportunity to use their most important sense and explore their environment at their own pace.
• Every dog is different. Age, temperament, training, environment and recall ability all play a part in deciding whether off-lead time is appropriate.
For Maggie, staying on lead means she can still enjoy her adventures while keeping her safe — and as you can see, she certainly doesn’t think she’s missing out!
Off lead isn’t the goal. A safe, happy and enriched dog is. 🤍
