🐾 THE PUPPY YOU CHOOSE BECOMES THE DOG YOU LIVE WITH 🐾

When you apply to adopt a puppy from WAGS, we ask you a lot of questions.

What’s your lifestyle like?
How active are you?
How much time do you have for training?
What’s your home environment like?
Are there children or other animals in the home?
What are you hoping to do with your dog?
And importantly what do you expect life with this puppy to look like when they’re an adult?

We’re not trying to make adoption difficult.

We’re trying to make the right match. ❤️

Because puppies are adorable little bundles of potential but the cute puppy you take home is going to grow into an adult dog with their own energy level, needs, personality and behaviours.

Take three of our WAGS girls as an example…

🐊 COCO our little crocodile

Coco is HIGH energy, incredibly intelligent and always ready to learn.

We believe there is likely some Malinois or German Shepherd in her, and you can certainly see those working-dog traits coming through.

She watches her humans 👀
She looks for direction.
She learns quickly.
And she needs her brain as well as her body kept busy.

That funny little crocodile snapping and crazy puppy play might be cute right now but it won’t be cute coming from a much bigger adult dog.

So Coco is already learning appropriate play, boundaries and how to switch that busy little brain off.

Her future family needs to understand that training isn’t something they’ll do for a few weeks.

It’s part of the commitment to Coco.

☀️ JUNE our lounge lizard

Then there’s our beautiful Junebug.

June is almost the opposite.

Want to go for a walk?
Sure!

Want to meet some people or dogs?
Sounds great!

Want to lie in the sunshine and do absolutely nothing for a while?

Even better. 😂

June enjoys life without needing life to be happening at 100 kilometres an hour.

She’s happy being part of your world and would probably describe a successful afternoon as a nice walk followed by an excellent nap.

🌸 DAISY a little bit of both

Daisy sits somewhere in the middle.

She’s playful, clever, extremely human-focused and absolutely LOVES cuddles.

She’s got some pep in her step and loves playing with other dogs and put her together with a pup like Coco and they’ll happily rark each other up until the energy level goes through the roof. 😂

But Daisy also has that lovely softer side.

She’s probably what we’d describe as a medium-energy puppy.

She’ll still need consistent training, continued socialisation and guidance as she grows so she develops into a confident, well-rounded adult dog.

❤️ And this is exactly why matching matters.

None of these puppies is “better” than another.

They’re simply different.

The perfect home for June may be completely wrong for Coco.

The person who would absolutely thrive with Coco’s intelligence and drive might find June far too cruisy.

And someone wanting a lovely balance of adventure, play and cuddles might find their perfect match in Daisy.

That’s why when someone says:

“I want that puppy!”

our next question isn’t simply:

“When can you pick her up?”

We want to know:

Will this puppy still suit your life in 6 months?
In two years?
In ten years?

Because we’re not matching you with the puppy you see in a photograph today.

🐾 We’re helping you choose the adult dog that puppy is going to become.

And getting that match right is one of the most important things we can do for you AND them. ❤️

Adoption isn’t about finding a puppy that fits your heart for five minutes.
It’s about finding a dog that fits your life for a lifetime.

❤️‍🩹 DAY TWO HIS HEALING BEGINS

Good morning from our beautiful boy. 🐾

We can share a little more about him today he is six years old.

Six years old, with hopefully many happy, healthy years still ahead of him. And that's exactly what we're working towards. ❤️

After everything yesterday brought, we are so happy to tell you that he slept really well through the night, with plenty of cuddles, reassurance and love.

And this morning, we could visibly see that some of the angry redness in his skin had already started to settle.

It's a small step.

But right now, every small step matters.

Yesterday was also the beginning of his skin-care journey with his first medicated bath and that's the little moment we're sharing with you in this video.

His skin has been through an enormous amount. There is still a lot of heat coming from his body and there is a long way to go, but he is now on the right medication and veterinary-approved supportive products to help his body heal from the inside and the outside.

His nutrition is another really important part of his recovery.

He is now on prescription food, given in small, frequent meals throughout the day. His body needs time to adjust, his stomach needs time to heal, and we need to help him gain weight slowly and safely.

We're not trying to rush any part of this.

Because this isn't an overnight transformation.

It isn't a one-week journey.

His body didn't get to this point overnight, and we can't expect it to heal overnight either.

This is going to take time, dedication, consistency and routine.

Medication.
Medicated baths and skin care.
Prescription nutrition.
Veterinary treatment.
Rest.
Monitoring.
Patience.

And a whole lot of love. ❤️

We still have tests and results ahead of us. We still have his eye surgery to get him ready for. His treatment may need to change and evolve as we learn more about what is happening inside his body.

So we're taking it one day at a time.

And today we're celebrating the little things.

He slept peacefully.
He ate his meals.
He accepted all the cuddles on offer.
His skin looked a little less angry this morning.

And perhaps most importantly, he can finally just concentrate on getting better.

We are incredibly grateful for the support this beautiful six year old boy has already received. Every donation, message and kind word means more than you know.

It is genuinely a privilege to have been entrusted with his care and to now walk beside him through his recovery.

There will be ups and downs.

But we're in this for however long it takes.

One meal.
One bath.
One cuddle.
One day at a time. ❤️‍🩹🐾

And we'll make sure you get to watch this beautiful boy come back to health right alongside us.

⚠️ CONTENT WARNING these photos are confronting.

This is our newest WAGS boy. ❤️‍🩹

Yesterday, last night and again today, we have spent hours working through a very difficult situation involving a dog who desperately needs help.

Today, his owner has made the incredibly difficult decision to surrender his care and recovery to WAGS Rescue NZ.

And before we tell you about what lies ahead for this beautiful boy, we need to talk about something really important.

Please no hate.
No judgement.
No anger towards his owner.

There is a very big difference between someone who deliberately harms or neglects an animal and someone who, because of circumstances in their own life, has not fully understood the extent of what is happening to their dog.

We already know what some people will say.

“But surely they could see it?”

We understand that reaction. You are looking at photographs that are incredibly difficult to see.

But you don’t know the circumstances. We do.

Those circumstances are private, and they will remain private.

This person is not a bad person.

They are going through something, and we are going to respect their privacy and their dignity just as much as we are going to respect the dignity of their dog.

There is no hate here.
There is no malice here.

And there is actually a very, very strong bond between this dog and his person. ❤️

Making the decision to hand over the care and recovery of a dog you deeply love is enormous.

It didn’t happen after one conversation.

It didn’t happen in a couple of hours.

This has taken time, patience, conversations, trust and a lot of emotion.

The fact that his owner has willingly reached the point of saying, “Please help my dog” and has entrusted WAGS with him is a huge step and an incredibly important milestone.

And we respect them for making it.

Now our job begins.

Our beautiful boy has already had blood tests taken and in coming weeks biopsies are being done. We are desperately hoping those results come back clear. 🙏

His skin requires significant treatment. He will need medication and ongoing veterinary care. He needs to be moved onto prescription food to support his health and recovery, and he will need surgery for entropion affecting his eyes.

Right now, we need to get his body healthier and stronger before putting him through surgery.

And then, when he’s ready, we’ll get those eyes sorted too. ❤️‍🩹

The photos you’re seeing are heartbreaking.

But they don’t come close to showing what it was like seeing him standing in front of us today.

And yet, underneath everything his body is dealing with, there he is.

A beautiful boy.
A beautiful soul.
A dog who still has so much love to give.

That’s what we’re focusing on.

Not how he got here.
Where we go from here.

We don’t know yet what his total veterinary costs will be.

Blood tests. Biopsies. Medication. Skin treatment. Prescription food. Entropion surgery. Follow-up appointments and whatever else his veterinary team determines he needs.

We have taken responsibility for him, so we’re asking our WAGS community to help us carry that responsibility.

We have a balance of $590 remaining to be paid for today.

If you can spare $5, $10, $20 or anything towards his treatment and recovery, please help us help him. ❤️‍🩹

And please, when you comment on this post, remember there is a human being on the other side of this story too.

Kindness costs nothing.

We will stay in communication with his owner. We will respect their privacy. And we will keep our community updated on this beautiful boy’s progress.

We also want to say a huge thank you to Maya and Amelia for bringing this situation to our attention. And thanks Dr Fiona for your care and Compassion 🩷

Without people being prepared to speak up, reach out and ask for help, sometimes rescue can’t begin.

Today it has.
This is Day One.
No hate.
No blame.
No public shaming.

Just a dog who needs help, a person who has allowed us to give it, and a rescue that has said:

We’ve got him. ❤️‍🩹🐾

Now let’s get this beautiful boy well.

🐾 THIS is what fostering looks like 🐾

Look at Faye and Vinny. 🥹❤️

Safe.
Relaxed.
Snuggled together.
Sleeping upside down with absolutely no regard for personal space. 😂
Learning what it feels like to simply belong in a home.

They’re currently with one of our wonderful WAGS foster families, and these photos are exactly why we are asking for more people to join us.

Because this is what we want for every dog in our rescue.

Our HQ keeps dogs safe. It gives them food, warmth, medical care and people who love them.

But a foster home gives them something different.

🏡 A couch to snooze on.
🐾 Walkies and everyday adventures.
❤️ One-on-one love and cuddles.
🐶 Time with other family dogs where suitable.
🌱 The chance to learn how to live in a home and prepare for adoption.

And for WAGS, fostering means we have space to say YES when another dog desperately needs us.

You don’t have to foster forever.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
And you don’t have to do it alone.

When you foster with WAGS, you become part of our foster family community. We support you, provide what your foster dog needs, and we’re right there alongside you.

Faye and Vinny are showing us exactly what can happen when somebody simply says:

“Yep. You can stay with me for a while.” 🥹

Could you be that person for one of our dogs?

🌼 DAISY NEEDS A FOSTER HOME 🌼

Earlier today we put the call out for new foster families to join WAGS…

Well, Daisy heard us and apparently decided she’d like to put her application in first. 😂🐾

This little girl is seriously playful, ridiculously cuddly and LOVES the company of other dogs. She’ll happily snuggle up with you, follow you around and quite possibly decide that you are her new best friend forever. ❤️

She’s already doing really well using her p*e pads, she’s had her vaccinations, and she’s ready to get out into the world for walkies, adventures and new experiences.

Will she be a good little girl?

Most of the time. 😂

She is still a puppy, after all!

But this is actually a really important stage for Daisy and her siblings. They’re getting older, the sibling squabbles are beginning, and now is the perfect time for them to start heading into their own foster homes where they can develop their confidence and independence away from the litter.

And that’s where YOU might come in. 🌼

If you can open your heart and home to Daisy, WAGS will look after everything she needs. We just need you to provide the safe home, love, cuddles and guidance.

📩 Please PM the WAGS page if you can foster Daisy. We’ll give you a call, answer all your questions and talk you through everything.

🐾 WAGS provides the support and everything you need.

Never fostered before? That’s absolutely okay! You don’t need to know all the answers before putting your hand up that’s what we’re here for.

❤️ Casper then and now reel and; A little message from Casper’s new mum and dad, Tina & Andrew:

“The process of adopting Casper was great. WAGS were really committed to making sure that we were the right family for Casp and made it easy for us to get to know him, and vice versa.

Casper is a really special boy who loves hard, and we could see how sad it was for Pip and Ally to let him go but thankfully they could tell that we were smitten!

He’s only been home with us a couple of days and we are all bonding really quickly… such a snuggle puss. 😀

Thank you WAGS for letting us bring Casper into our hearts and home.” ❤️

And THAT is why we wait for the right home.

Not the first home.
Not simply a good home.
The right one.

Tina and Andrew, there was never any doubt about how smitten you were. And yes, letting our boy go hurt like hell. There were definitely tears. But knowing Casper is curled up snuggling with you, with beautiful Kora beside him, and that he has an entire new life waiting for him in Ōhope makes every one of those tears worth it.

Our boy is home. And he is exactly where he was meant to be. 🏡❤️🐾

👻🩵CASPER HAS A HOME. 🩵👻

There are some adoption posts we write with a smile.

And then there are the ones we write with tears in our eyes because we know just how much it took to get here.

This is one of those posts.

Our beautiful Casper was born with a grade three heart murmur.

To this day, it hasn’t stopped him from living life at full sp*ed. Casper doesn’t know there’s anything different about him.

He just knows how to be Casper. 🩵

Goofy. Ridiculously loving. Dog obsessed. People obsessed. Handsome beyond words. And the owner of quite possibly the biggest, happiest, goofiest smile at WAGS.

He melted our hearts a long time ago.

There were applications.
There were meet and greets.
There were trials.

But his heart murmur was understandably a big consideration for people.

And somewhere along the way, we made peace with something:

If Casper never found his people, he could stay with us forever.

We loved him that much.

But quietly, we hoped.

And we prayed that somewhere out there were people who wouldn’t look at Casper and see a heart condition.

They would simply see Casper.

And then Tina and Andrew reached out from Ōhope.

These were people who understood. People who had opened their hearts and home to rescue dogs with health conditions before. People who understood that none of us are promised a certain number of tomorrows what matters is filling the ones we get with as much love as possible.

We talked.
And talked.
And messaged some more.

Then Tina and Andrew travelled all the way to Auckland for a weekend just to spend time with our boy.

And they fell madly, deeply, completely in love with him 🩵

But there was one very important member of Casper’s new family who needed a little time first.

His beautiful new K9 sister, Kora. 🐾🩷

Kora needed surgery and a biopsy, so Casper’s big adventure was put on hold while she recovered.

Then came the news everyone had been hoping for…

Kora’s results were clear. No cancer. 🙏🩷

And finally, it was time.

Andrew made the journey back to Auckland, picked up his boy and took him HOME.

Our little WAGS ghost has officially left the building. 👻😭

And where has he landed?

Ōhope.
By the BEACH. 🌊🐾

Casper is already out there living his absolute best life exploring, meeting people, making friends, hanging out with his new sister Kora and flashing that enormous Casper smile at anyone lucky enough to cross his path.

There are dogs who become part of the fabric of a rescue.

Casper is one of those dogs.

In so many ways, that giant goofy grin became a little face of WAGS. He reminded us every day that a medical diagnosis doesn’t define a dog.

Casper wasn’t looking for someone to overlook his heart.

He was waiting for Tina and Andrew to give him theirs. 🩵

And they did.

Tina and Andrew, thank you for seeing everything we see in our beautiful boy. Thank you for making the journey, for taking the time, and most of all, for choosing Casper exactly as he is.

And beautiful Kora look after your new little brother. We have a feeling the two of you have some pretty incredible adventures ahead. 🩷🩵

And to our Casper…

Go live that big, ridiculous, wonderful beach life.

Run in the sand.
Make friends with everyone.
Love your sister.
Make your mum and dad laugh.
And never, ever stop flashing that goofy smile.

Because somehow, little man….

your imperfect heart managed to capture all of ours. 🩵

🏡🩵CASPER IS HOME.🩵🏡

And this one…

This one means everything.

🩷Sometimes rescue looks like this.

No emergency.
No heartbreaking story.
No fundraiser.
No big announcement.

Just two dogs, sound asleep, tangled together without a care in the world. 🐾

And maybe this is the part of rescue we don’t show enough.

Because behind every adoption post, vet visit, fundraiser, food delivery and frantic phone call… this is what we’re working towards.

A full belly.

A warm bed.

A friend to snuggle into.

And the absolute certainty that when you close your eyes, you are safe. 🩷

After one very big weekend at WAGS, we think these two have the right idea.

Sleep tight, babies.

Tomorrow we do it all again. 🐾💤

This is rescue too🩷

📸🐾 ADOPTION DAY PHOTO BOMB INCOMING!! 🐾📸

We promised you more… and there was absolutely NO way we could choose just a few photos from such an amazing day. 😂❤️

So here it is THE WAGS ADOPTION DAY PHOTO BOMB! 💥🐶

Look at the faces. The cuddles. The smiles. The puppies being passed from one set of loving arms to another. THIS is what rescue is all about. 🥹

Our day at Animates Henderson was absolutely incredible, and seeing so many people come through the doors to meet our babies, support WAGS and simply spend time with us meant more than you know.

Some people came for cuddles.
Some came to support.
Some came “just for a look”… 👀😂
And some may have walked away having met a little someone they simply couldn’t stop thinking about. 🏡🐾

A HUGE thank you to the Animates Henderson team for welcoming us into their beautiful new-look store and giving our puppies their very own Puppy Kingdom for the day. 👑🐶

And to our WAGS team what a bloody brilliant bunch of humans you are. ❤️

Now enjoy the photo dump…

WARNING: excessive puppy cuteness ahead. 😂🐶📸

And yes… we have some pretty exciting updates coming. 👀🏡❤️
