“But they’re still acting normal and happy so they aren’t in pain!”

As a vet, I hear this constantly when a pet is limping. It comes from a place of love, but it’s a major misconception.

Think of human behavior: if you tweak your knee, you walk into work, push through your day, and smile at your coworkers. You don’t whine with every step, but you are absolutely uncomfortable.

Animals do the exact same thing. Excitement for a walk, dinner time, or seeing you at the door creates an adrenaline rush that easily masks their discomfort.

Regardless of how happy they seem, a limp is never normal. It only happens for two reasons: pain or structural instability.

A cheerful demeanor or a wagging tail does not equal a pain-free body. If they are limping around the house, they are hurting. Let’s look past the “happy” behavior and address the underlying issue. 🤍

0.9% Isotonic Saline is a medical staple we use every day in the vet clinic. It is the safest way to flush wounds and rinse debris at home without causing irritation.

THE RECIPE
Mix 1 tsp of non-iodised salt with 2 cups of boiled water. Stir until dissolved and let cool.

5 WAYS TO USE IT
- Flush or wipe eyes: Clear away irritants (dust, sand, hair) or discharge.

- Clean wounds: Remove dirt and debris from superficial scrapes or grazes.

- Skin fold hygiene: Clean paws, skin folds or delicate skin areas.

- Chemical dilution: Wash off harmful substances.

- Crust removal: Soften dried nasal or skin discharge for pain-free cleaning.

Always use non-iodised salt to prevent irritation and discard any remaining solution after 24 hours to reduce bacterial growth.

The financial side of pet care is something neither owners nor vets enjoy discussing, but it is a reality we face every day in the consult room.

Even as a vet, I have insurance for my pets so I never have to compromise. It allows me to stay focused on the diagnostics and treatment, not the budget.

We advocate for insurance because it keeps the focus where it belongs: on the best medical path for your pet.

If you have insurance, has there been a “thank goodness we have this” moment for your pet? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments.

Most pet owners don’t recognise nausea until it progresses to vomiting or food refusal.

But in many cases, the signs start much earlier, and they’re often subtle.

Small changes in behaviour, appetite, or body language can be your first indication that something isn’t quite right. Recognising these early can make a meaningful difference in how quickly your pet gets the care they need.

Licking is not harmless.

It’s a subtle behaviour that can be easy to overlook but when it comes to wounds it’s rarely beneficial. In the clinic, licking is one of the most common reasons we see delayed healing and secondary infections.

🍫 “My dog just ate chocolate... now what?”

It’s no surprise, Easter is the busiest time of year for chocolate toxicity.

In the clinic, vets don’t guess... they calculate. Chocolate toxicity calculators help us determine the risk to your pet. Swipe through to learn what information we need, how you can use these calculators for context, and how to act.

It is vital to act as soon as possible if you think your dog has eaten chocolate.

Note: Online calculators are a guide for context only. They cannot replace a clinical exam. If your dog has eaten chocolate, we always recommend contacting your vet promptly.
