Ozzie’s first scent competition was a success! We managed to get 5/5 searches and a Judges Merit for the interior search.

Oz’s searches were not particularly impressive. We took pretty much all the time that was allotted to be 90% sure that was where the odour was. He was in and out of sourcing odour. He would find it but he wouldn’t stick by it and move onto other things. He also doesn’t have a formal indication. So, I was reading him purely based on his body language and behaviour. And by the grace of God we got every single one despite all of this!

However, I am very proud that he even went searching for the scent. We have only ever trained away from home ONCE. So, the fact he could understand and generalise the “seek” command in a completely new environment with lots of distractions is impressive. Especially for an 8-month-old puppy who is definitely entering the hectic, hormonal teenage phase.

We also only just introduced vehicle, interior and exterior searches a little over 2 weeks ago. I originally entered him into just the container searches. Sansa was supposed to be doing the interior, exterior and vehicle searches. However, Sansa came into season and was unable to compete. The managers were kind enough to swap her entries with Ozzie. I went into this competition with zero expectations. I really had no idea how it would go. So, I am beyond stoked that we managed to come away with a 100% success rate and a judges merit. Ozzie very much enjoys scent work. It comes naturally to him.

In conclusion, I know there's a lot more training Ozzie and I could do to improve his searches, especially in regard to his formal indication. But I am so very pleased with his behaviour during this trial, that he worked when asked and displayed a cool, calm temperament throughout. This is what makes me very happy. This is his genetics shining through which provides a solid, stable foundation to build upon. Looking forward to what we get up to together.

Our dogs live active lifestyles where they are frequently out exploring the world with us. Beaches, parks, bush, urban areas, shopping centres. We take them away on almost all our holidays, to visit family and friends. They are our perfect companions who are a very important part of our family. Dogs who can handle the world with confidence, reliability and good manners creates good canine citizens. Which is our goal. Temperament is an important aspect in the selection of the dogs in our breeding program. Genetics help lay a solid foundation which is then solidified through positive exposure, appropriate socialisation and training. Confident, social, intelligent and healthy dogs is the goal.
