May has so much going on that it sometimes feels like you’ve been thrown around in a washing machine!

At the beginning of the month you have loads of plants calling ‘enough!’ and it’s time to start pulling out spent blooms to get ready for the spring plantings.

On the other side there are a bazillion seeds being sown, seedlings being pricked out and then hardened off ready for planting as soon as those beds get clear.

THEN, smack in the middle of all that seasonal change is Mother’s Day and the outpouring of love to all the mums out there, which involves bouquets, gifts and new flowery experiences here on the farmlet now too!

Phew, just writing it all down was exhausting!!

I’m an artist…

This artist has found her place and it’s amongst flowers.

All things flowers - growing, tending, harvesting, curating, arranging, talking about, drawing, teaching and sharing them too.

Despite a really difficult ‘Summer’ we’ve been pulling up some huge dahlia crowns this week. Such a relief when we had sooooo much rain in January/February. I was really worried we might lose a lot to rot. So, even though we didn’t have as many blooms as we’d have liked this season, the plants were busy underground producing lots of tubers below decks instead! ☺️

Anyhoo, on a side note, I can never get over how lumpy, bumpy and generally unattractive dahlia tubers are underground and yet they produce such gorgeous blooms each summer - strange but true!

Here we Gooooooooo! 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♀️

The annual big dahlia tuber dig has begun here on the farmlet.

We have almost 500 tuber crowns to lift, sort, label, pack, and put into storage for winter.

And with the nasty wet weather forecast for next week we need to crack on with it THIS week!!

If only we could do this job as quickly as the timelapse runs!!
😆😆

PS: once you’ve watched us running around like ninnies a few times check out the cloud action above - it’s very swirly cool!

Got some Spring bulbs getting ahead of themselves (and by a couple of seasons too!) around here 🙄

When I think about it, I realise I’ve spent a lot of my adult life doing the things I ‘should’ rather than following my own path.

Now, as a flower farmer/florist/creative I’m taking the learnings from all of those ‘shoulds’ to follow my own star ✨

“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.”

Thanks so much for your support this season flower lovers!

The Summer season is now done for us but we have big plans for Winter flower experiences indoors and our Spring Bouquet Subscriptions won’t be far away either!

🌸🌸 WATCH THIS SPACE - COMING SOON! 🌷🌷

THAT’S IT!
The last bouquet for the season…

That’s a wrap for the 25/26 flower season here on the Urban Floral Farmlet.

We kicked off the season with the first Spring blooms way back in August 2025 and have been steadily pumping out fresh, locally grown, seasonal flowers until this week.

Out in the field it’s time now to start work on getting ready for Spring with a busy few weeks ahead clearing out the Summer flower beds to be replaced by Spring seedlings, bulbs and corms.

Indoors, over Winter, we are in preparation mode for hosting a series of Farmlet Workshops, where you’ll get the chance to get hands-on creative and curious with blooms here on the Farmlet - exciting! I can hardly wait!

And it won’t be long before our Spring flowers start popping up too (visualise an abundance of tulips, ranunculus, poppies and more!), so keep an eye out for our Spring Bouquet Subscription Launch as well 🌷🌷

Watch this space - so many fab flower treats coming your way SOON!!

Thank you so much for your support, especially my regular local Subscribers. Getting to meet many more of you at markets, on the Farmlet and out and about in the local Te Atatu community and here on socials too, has been such a treat. I’m so chuffed to be able to share my blooms with you all 🌸💗🌸

Our first ever ‘Farmlet Tour’ experience was an absolute joy last week 🥰☺️

We launched with a very special Mother’s Day event which saw a large group of mums and daughters coming to the farmlet to enjoy a very special time together learning about the Farmlet, the plants, the beginnings and the exciting future coming for

After a verrry slow 😆 farmlet walking tour and Q&A we adjourned to the workshop for a well earned morning tea and natter.

To cap off their special day each mum got to select a gift bouquet to take home for Mother’s Day.

I loved sharing the farmlet’s story and really enjoyed the time with such a curious and gardening-mad(just like me!) bunch of gals!

Watch this space for more farmlet experiences to come soon!

It has been a massive week - as a flower farmer/florist, a small business owner and a mum and baba too - there has been a lot going on here at the farmlet.

Preparing for and seeing through a week of Mother’s Day sales, pre-orders, gifting and a Farmlet Tour to cap it all off sure has been a wild ride!

Thank you so much to my flower loving community for your ongoing support and love for this little business 🥰🥰
We love you right back!

Wishing all the mums, grandmas and mum figures a very special Mother’s Day today too 💗💗

Marisa 🌸
