They may feel perfectly soft when you stroke the top of their coat, but are you checking all the hidden areas where matting develops?
Angoras, Cashmeres and other long haired rabbits are especially prone to painful matting around:
🐰 The ears
🐰 The mouth, chin and bib
🐰 The armpits and groin
🐰 The elbows, hocks and other joints
🐰 The tail and rear
Brushing through these dense coats can pull painfully on the wool and the paper-thin skin underneath, particularly once tangles have started forming. Rabbit skin tears extremely easily, so repeatedly pulling at mats can cause pain and injury.
However, allowing mats to build up is also incredibly painful. Tight mats constantly pull on the skin and can restrict a rabbit’s movement.
Long haired rabbits need a proactive clipping schedule, not grooming only once the matting becomes visible. Angoras and Cashmeres generally require clipping every 6–8 weeks, depending on their individual coat and how quickly it grows.
Between clips, use your fingertips to check right down to the skin in every high risk area shown, not just across the surface of the coat.
Please never use scissors to cut out a mat. Their delicate skin can be pulled up inside the mat and cut accidentally.

Every rabbit attending a grooming appointment will receive:

• Scent gland cleaning
• A basic health and wellbeing check
We’ll record their weight and check areas including their ears, eyes, hocks and general condition. You’ll be sent home with a paper health check record that you can keep and bring back to future appointments, making it easier to monitor changes over time, particularly changes in weight.
At Raining Rabbits Rescue, we complete these checks, including weighing, every week. We believe regular hands on checks are incredibly important, so why not take advantage of an experienced eye checking your rabbit while they’re already with us?
This basic check is not a veterinary examination and does not replace regular care from a rabbit experienced vet. If we notice anything concerning, we’ll let you know so you can arrange appropriate veterinary care.
