✨ Loving your horse is not an excuse for unwanted behaviours created through handling or misunderstanding. ❤️🐴

Too often, I cross paths with people who genuinely love their horses, yet that love alone doesn’t prevent outcomes that are unnecessary, avoidable and unfair to the horse.

Good intentions matter, but they’re not enough. We also need knowledge, feel, timing and an understanding of how our actions influence the horse in front of us.

The good news? These are skills we can learn. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

✨Horsemanship is definitely evolving, and it’s about bloody time.

Every horse is an individual, with their own history, experiences, needs and way of seeing the world. What works for one may not work for another.

The old-fashioned, one-size-fits-all approach serves neither horse nor human. We can do better by learning to listen, adapt and teach the horse in front of us.

✨Before you approach your horse, try this…

Whether they’re in the stable, paddock or pasture, before you approach - relax your shoulders and take three or more long, deep breaths through your nose.
👉 This is how they breathe.

If possible approach slightly from the side not directly in front of their head and offer the back of your hands. Let them choose to make first contact. If they seem unsure, breathe, relax and offer again. Don’t force it.

This simple exercise can help you build connection, invite initial contact and learn more about how your horse feels about your approach. If they walk away, don’t take it personally. You’ve just learned something worth exploring.

Here, I breathe out as my horse passes behind my back, and he stops, both directions when I can’t see him.

But this isn’t magic, it’s something you can develop through clear communication, good timing and learning to understand how your horse responds to your signals.

Because the goal isn’t simply to have a horse that does what you ask. It’s to become a partner your horse can rely on.
