Managing heat stress in poultry is vital for maintaining bird health and ensuring consistent egg or meat production. High temperatures can quickly lead to respiratory distress, lower immunity, and even death.
Based on the infographic, here are the core strategies for keeping chickens cool:
1. Ventilation and Airflow
Keeping air moving is the first line of defense.
* Coop Cooling: Use fans and misting systems within the coop to lower the ambient temperature.
* Air Circulation: Ensure there is adequate ventilation to prevent "dead air" pockets where heat and ammonia can build up.
2. Hydration and Nutrients
Water consumption increases significantly during hot weather, and chickens lose vital minerals through panting.
* Cool Water: Always provide access to fresh, cool water; chickens will often refuse to drink lukewarm or hot water.
* Electrolytes: Adding electrolytes to the water helps replenish salt and mineral balances lost during heat-induced stress.
3. Environmental Management
Reducing direct exposure to the sun is essential for temperature regulation.
* Shade and Shelter: Provide outdoor shade structures or natural tree cover so birds can escape the direct glare of the sun.
* Strategic Feeding: Digestion generates internal body heat. Avoid feeding during the hottest parts of the day; instead, offer feed during the cooler morning or evening hours.
> Key Takeaway: Proactive management improves overall poultry productivity and prevents the severe losses associated with extreme heat.
