10 Things ONLY German Shepherd Dog Owners Will Understand

There's no mistaking a German Shepherd. You know him when you see him. And with his confident, smart, and courageous personality, he's any owner's loyal best friend.

GSDs and their owner share a very special bond; it has to be experienced to be understood. Of course, any owner will tell you that's because the German Shepherd is an incredibly special dog. They'll also tell you that these ten things are absolutely true:

1. German Shepherds will explore everything with their noses. You'll find evidence of their very thorough sniffing everywhere..walls, doors, windows, and more. It's no wonder they make such great police and detection dogs

2. As a GSD owner, you have a pretty solid belief that your dog might actually be smarter than you are. After all, what can't your dog do?!

3. You know that your dog is all ears. Not only can your dog hear everything, but his tall, moderately pointed ears are absolutely adorable. There's no better head-tilt than a German Shepherd head-tilt.

4. You're not ever lonely when you own a German Shepherd. This loyal canine is always by your side.

5. You know that you have to be careful with chewing, especially during the puppy teething phrase. You GSD can fit his mouth around anything...even the couch. Any GSD owner will tell you that training is essential.

6. Shedding? If you're a GSD owner, you know that dog hair is part of everything you own. It's on the couch, all over the floor, and on every outfit you wear. It's just part of life!

7. Need the job done? Just ask your dog. GSD owners know that their dogs are working dogs and can do almost anything. No wonder people always think your dog is a service or police dog.

8. Thinking of lounging on the couch? Not until you've walked your GSD, taken him to the park, or gotten some sort of exercise. GSD are super active, and therefore, you are too. You definitely get your steps in with this dog.

9. You no stranger to a nose nudging you. It might be a nose in the back, nose on your leg, or even nose in your face. Your GSD loves to work and there's a reason he's in the herding group. So you're familiar with him trying to utilize those instincts with you and your family too.

10. There's no feeling like loving and being loved by a German Shepherd. That's for sure. He'll be your loyal, loving, and dedicated companion for all of his days.

The Dangers of Onions For Dogs

Trace amounts will likely not cause problems but large quantities can lead to anemia in dogs.
Onions in any form may cause anemia in dogs. Whether raw or cooked, fresh or dehydrated, onion seasoning or onion powder, a large enough quantity in comparison to the dog's size may create anemia. Onions are very common in human food and are often included in a variety of processed foods including baby food. People food manufacturers use onions to make food tastier and they can often be found within the long list of ingredients. Onions are very palatable to dogs in the form of onion rings, onion seasonings, raw onions in salads, dips, baked goods, processed meats, etc. A small quantity of onions may not create any serious illness in most dogs but, since there is no real need to feed onions to dogs, it is best to keep them away from your dogs. Small dogs in particular who find a cache of tasty foods laced with onions should be watched carefully for symptoms of onion toxicity.

What is Anemia?
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a molecule that carries oxygen to the tissues. The oxidants in onions cause the formation of Heinz-bodies creating red bloods cells that are rigid and unable to function properly. The red blood cells rupture and are filtered out of the bloodstream. Anemia is the condition where the number of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin is unusually low. Since red blood cells carry much needed oxygen to the tissues and organs, lack of red blood cells can create a range of problems including heart failure. Onion toxicity in dogs can create what is called Heinz-body hemolytic anemia.

The Symptoms of Onion Toxicity in Dogs
Signs of onion toxicity include:

general weakness
increased heart rate
increased respiratory rate
vomiting
decreased appetite
diarrhea
depression
blood in the urine
jaundice appearing as a yellowing of tissues such as eyes, gums and skin.

10 Quick Facts About German Shepherds

As cuddly as a teddy bear to those that care for them and cold as ice to those that don’t, German shepherds love friends, fun and food. They’re not too fond of lazy days, and they definitely don’t like knocks on the door. But they’re eager to please and even more eager to see what’s hiding in the bushes.

1- Aloof

German shepherds love their owners, but aren’t so fond of strangers. Properly trained and socialized shepherds aren’t aggressive with strangers, but they make it known that they don’t want someone they’re not familiar with to cross into their territory.

2- Protective

In addition to being a bit standoffish with strangers, shepherds belt out a vicious-sounding bark when anyone knocks on your door. And they won’t hesitate to protect the ones who love them if danger would arise. They’re especially – and sometimes to a fault – protective of children.

3- Energetic

German shepherds need a way to burn off some energy, because they have a lot. They demand daily walks and playtime. If they’re not properly exercised, they’ll often respond by being destructive, barking, running around wildly inside the house and generally acting out.

4- Intelligent

Synonymous with intelligence, German shepherds were ranked third when more than 200 AKC judges rated over 100 breeds on their intelligence. They’re easy to train, learning many simple commands in as little as five repetitions.

5- Curious

A German shepherd isn’t one to stay away from something because he’s not sure what it is. They love exploring their surroundings, often checking out a yard’s boundary when they go outside each day. Their curiosity is especially noticeable when they’re puppies, getting into everything they can get their paws and nose on.

6- Agile

German shepherds can nearly instantly break into top speed, come to a sudden stop and round a sharp corner without stumbling over themselves or their surroundings. It’s one of the many reasons they’re often used as a police and military dog. Puppies are considerably less graceful, because of their lengthy limbs they can’t quite handle.

7- Hip Dyspepsia

Although German shepherds suffer from many types of medical conditions, they’re most commonly associated with hip dyspepsia. The debilitating condition is often the result of poor breeding practices. If you get a puppy from a breeder, always ask to see the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals hip papers to ensure the puppy’s parents have good hips.

8- Three Colors

A mix of beige and black is the most common color type for German shepherds, but solid black and solid white shepherds also exist. If you ever plan to show your pup, the American Kennel Club notes that white shepherds are disqualified.

9- Large

Although many German shepherds remain somewhat thin through the first two years of their life, they quickly fill out afterward. They’re large and powerful dogs, ranging from 22 to 26 inches and usually between 50 to 90 pounds, with females on the lower end of the spectrum. If they’re not properly trained, they can easily pull an adult to the ground if they run after something.

10- Shedding

German shepherds are prolific shedders. Brush one for 15 minutes and you’ll see hair floating in the air again 15 minutes later. Daily brushing is the only way to prevent a buildup of hair in your house.
