MEET THE COMPETITORS 🐾
Next in our series is Eden Riva and Dakota, making the journey from a small town near Lecco in northern Italy. 🇮🇹
At 23, Eden is one of the younger handlers heading to Huntington Farm, and she's the first in her family to take up trialling. She said: "When I was young we had a collie in our family, and my father remembered that she used to work geese by herself even if no one had ever taught her how to do it, so he looked for something similar and he bumped into sheepdog trialling."
Eden wasn't sold on the idea at first. She was seventeen when she watched her first competition, and her honest verdict was: "an old people's sporting discipline, boring." Then she met Aurelio, her teacher and now her friend, who told her to get a border collie. She did, and, in her words, her life completely changed.
Six years on, Eden works in a dog daycare and can't imagine life without a border collie. Her partner on the field is Dakota, five years old, raised by Eden from a puppy and the first of her dogs to run at the top level. "He's got a sweet nature," she says, "and he's the best friend I could've asked for."
It's a first World Trial for both of them, and Eden says she's really excited about taking part.
