💡LE COMPENSAZIONI: COME IL CORPO SI ADATTA AL CAMBIAMENTO 📌

🐶Il corpo di un cane è straordinariamente capace di adattarsi.

🐾Quando il movimento o la funzione di una parte del corpo cambiano, l’organismo può sviluppare strategie di adattamento che gli permettono di continuare a svolgere le attività quotidiane. Questo fenomeno prende il nome di **compensazione**.

🤹Le compensazioni rappresentano spesso una risposta fisiologica e protettiva: aiutano a mantenere il movimento e a redistribuire temporaneamente i carichi all’interno del sistema muscolo-scheletrico.

🐕‍🦺Tuttavia, quando questi adattamenti persistono nel tempo o non sono più funzionali, possono modificare la biomeccanica del movimento e influenzare la distribuzione delle sollecitazioni su tutto il corpo.

🤓Per questo motivo, nella riabilitazione veterinaria e nell’osteopatia animale, il movimento viene osservato nella sua globalità.

👐L’attenzione non è rivolta soltanto alla zona in cui compare un problema, ma al modo in cui l’intero organismo si è adattato nel tempo.

💪Muscoli, articolazioni, sistema nervoso e tessuti connettivi lavorano come un sistema integrato: una variazione del carico o della funzione in una regione del corpo può influenzare, direttamente o indirettamente, anche distretti apparentemente lontani.

📝Durante una valutazione funzionale vengono osservati diversi elementi, tra cui:

🟠 asimmetrie
🟢 alterazioni della qualità del movimento
🔴 strategie di compensazione
🔵 adattamenti posturali e funzionali
🟡 variazioni nella distribuzione dei carichi

🤔Questi segnali aiutano a comprendere come il corpo si stia organizzando e adattando nel tempo.

👓Comprendere le compensazioni significa andare oltre il semplice sintomo e leggere il movimento come l’espressione di un sistema biologico complesso, dinamico e in continua evoluzione.

💡COMPENSATION: HOW THE BODY ADAPTS TO CHANGE 📌

🐶 A dog's body has an extraordinary ability to adapt.

🐾 When movement or function changes in one part of the body, the organism may develop adaptive strategies that allow it to continue performing everyday activities. This phenomenon is known as **compensation**.

🤹 Compensations are often physiological and protective responses: they help maintain movement and temporarily redistribute loads within the musculoskeletal system.

🐕‍🦺 However, when these adaptations persist over time or are no longer functional, they may alter movement biomechanics and influence the distribution of forces throughout the body.

🤓 For this reason, animal rehabilitation and animal osteopathy consider movement from a whole-body perspective.

👐 The focus is not only on the area where a problem appears, but on how the entire organism has adapted over time.

💪Muscles, joints, the nervous system and connective tissues work as an integrated system: a change in load or function in one region of the body may directly or indirectly influence other apparently unrelated areas.

📝During a functional assessment, different aspects are observed, including:

🟠 asymmetries
🟢 changes in movement quality
🔴 compensatory strategies
🔵 postural and functional adaptations
🟡 variations in load distribution

🤔These signs help us understand how the body is organising and adapting over time.

👓Understanding compensations means looking beyond the symptom and recognising movement as the expression of a complex, dynamic and continuously evolving biological system.

Ho trovato questo interessante post di Lisa Binch che affronta un tema di cui si parla ancora troppo poco: l'impatto che un intervento di sterilizzazione può avere sulla fascia, sulla postura e sul recupero funzionale del cane.

La sterilizzazione è spesso considerata un intervento di routine, ma rimane comunque una chirurgia addominale. La guarigione non riguarda solo la cute e la rimozione dei punti di sutura: anche i tessuti profondi, la fascia, il core e la funzionalità del movimento necessitano di tempo per recuperare e ritrovare il loro corretto equilibrio.

Come professionista che si occupa di riabilitazione e osteopatia animale, credo sia importante iniziare a riflettere maggiormente su come accompagnare il cane nel ritorno graduale all'attività fisica dopo l'intervento, proprio come faremmo in molti altri contesti riabilitativi.

I came across this excellent post by Lisa Binch discussing a topic that deserves far more attention: the impact that spay surgery can have on fascia, posture and functional recovery in dogs.

Although spaying is often considered a routine procedure, it is still abdominal surgery. Healing is about much more than skin closure and suture removal. Deeper tissues, fascia, core function and overall movement function all need time to recover and adapt.

As a professional working in animal rehabilitation and canine osteopathy, I believe we should pay greater attention to supporting our patients' gradual and functional return to activity following surgery, just as we do in many other rehabilitation settings.

🟢How Can a Spay Affect Your Dog’s Fascia?

Spaying (an ovariohysterectomy) is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in dogs. Through my work with canine anatomy, movement and fascia, I’m often asked how this type of surgery may affect the body beyond the obvious skin incision.

This post looks at spaying from an anatomical perspective and explores how the body’s fascial system responds during healing.

Before going any further, I want to clarify something.

This is not a post about whether you should or shouldn’t spay your dog. There is ongoing research, discussion and differing opinions around the subject, and every owner will have their own views.

The decision to spay should always be discussed with your veterinary surgeon, taking into account your dog’s age, breed, health and individual circumstances. It is not something I advise on within my own scope of practice.

What I can do is explain how abdominal surgery affects the body’s tissues, particularly the fascia, and why this may sometimes influence movement and comfort during recovery.

🟢What is Fascia?

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and internal organs. Rather than working as separate structures, the body is connected through this three-dimensional system.

Healthy fascia is strong, adaptable and allows tissues to glide smoothly. When it is affected by injury or surgery, the body repairs it by producing new collagen and forming scar tissue.

Scar tissue is a normal and necessary part of healing, but it does not behave exactly like the original tissue. It is often less elastic and may temporarily alter how forces are transferred through the body as healing progresses.

🟢What Happens During a Spay?

During a routine spay, the veterinary surgeon usually makes an incision through the linea alba—the strong band of connective tissue that runs along the midline of the abdomen.

This approach is commonly used because the linea alba contains very few blood vessels and allows access to the abdominal cavity while minimising disruption to the abdominal muscles.

However, it is still an incision through an important fascial structure.

As healing takes place, the body lays down new collagen and gradually remodels the scar. This process continues for weeks to months, with deeper connective tissues such as fascia often requiring longer to regain their tensile strength and mobility than the skin. Although the incision may appear healed externally after a couple of weeks, deeper tissues continue to remodel for several months.

🟢How Can This Affect the Fascia?

Because fascia forms one connected system throughout the body, changes in one area can sometimes influence movement elsewhere.

As the scar matures, it may not have exactly the same mobility as the surrounding tissue. In many dogs this creates no noticeable issues, while in others it may contribute to:

* Reduced tissue glide around the abdominal wall.
* Increased tension through the underside of the body.
* Temporary changes in posture or movement.
* Altered movement patterns during walking, running or jumping.
* Increased compensation through the back, pelvis or hindlimbs.

The fascia surrounding the abdominal organs is continuous with the connective tissues of the abdominal wall (visceral fascia) Changes in mobility around the surgical site may therefore influence local tissue mechanics, although the degree to which this affects an individual dog varies considerably.

It is also important to remember that dogs are remarkably adaptable. Most recover very well following a routine spay, particularly when they receive appropriate post-operative care and a gradual return to activity.

🟢How Does Scar Tissue Affect the Abdominal Muscles?

A spay incision involves more than just the skin. To access the abdominal cavity, the surgeon opens the linea alba, which lies between the paired abdominal muscles.

The abdominal muscles themselves are generally separated rather than cut. However, they rely on the surrounding fascia to transfer forces efficiently through the trunk and provide stability during movement.

Following surgery, many dogs naturally reduce the use of their abdominal muscles to protect the surgical site. This is a normal response during healing but can temporarily affect posture, core stability and movement patterns.

As healing progresses, most dogs gradually regain normal function. Some, however, may continue to compensate by placing greater demand on other muscle groups, particularly those of the back, hips and shoulders.

This is one reason why a gradual return to exercise and appropriate rehabilitation can be beneficial.

🟢Does This Mean Dogs Shouldn’t Have Surgery?

Absolutely not.

Every surgical procedure causes some degree of tissue trauma—that is simply part of surgery. Veterinary surgeons recommend surgery because they believe the benefits outweigh the risks for the individual patient.

The purpose of this article is not to discourage surgery but to help owners understand that healing involves much more than the skin. The fascial system is also part of the healing process, and supporting normal movement afterwards may help optimise recovery.

🟢Supporting Recovery

Once your veterinary surgeon has confirmed that healing is progressing well, gentle rehabilitation can help restore normal movement and encourage healthy tissue mobility.

@ on the stage of healing, rehabilitation may include controlled lead walking, weight-shifting exercises, gentle mobility work, core strengthening and progressive conditioning to help rebuild strength and confidence.

Hands-on therapies may also play a role. Techniques such as therapeutic massage, myofascial release and osteopathic treatment aim to improve tissue mobility, reduce excessive soft tissue tension and encourage comfortable movement as healing progresses. These treatments should only be carried out once your veterinary surgeon has confirmed that the surgical site has healed sufficiently and should always be tailored to the individual dog.

A qualified canine rehabilitation therapist, veterinary physiotherapist or appropriately trained manual therapist can work alongside your veterinary surgeon to develop a safe rehabilitation programme.

There are two main surgical techniques used for spaying female dogs: an ovariectomy (OVE), where only the ovaries are removed, and an ovariohysterectomy (OVH), where both the ovaries and uterus are removed. The choice of procedure depends on different factors. Regardless of the technique used, both procedures require an abdominal incision through the body wall, meaning similar fascial tissues are involved in the healing process.
Ovariectomy is a smaller keyhole surgical procedure.

Come tecnico veterinario certificata in primo soccorso in UK, condivido alcune indicazioni pratiche per aiutare un animale ferito senza peggiorare la situazione:

1️⃣ Fermati in sicurezza – luci di emergenza, parcheggia fuori dalla carreggiata.
2️⃣ Non toccarlo a mani n**e – la paura può farlo reagire.
3️⃣ Coprigli la testa – una coperta o un panno lo calma immediatamente.
4️⃣ Niente cibo o acqua – potrebbe avere traumi interni.
5️⃣ Mantienilo al caldo – lo shock può causare ipotermia rapida.
6️⃣ Chiama i soccorsi specializzati – Carabinieri Forestali 1515, Polizia Stradale 113, CRAS della tua zona.
7️⃣ Se piccolo, usa una scatola con panno sopra la testa. Se grande, segnala la posizione e aspetta i soccorsi.

Anche un piccolo gesto – un panno e una telefonata – può salvare la vita di un animale selvatico.

As a certified veterinary technician in first aid (UK), I share some simple steps to help a wounded animal safely:

1️⃣ Stop safely – turn on hazard lights and park off the road.
2️⃣ Do not touch with bare hands – fear may trigger defensive reactions.
3️⃣ Cover its head – a blanket or cloth calms it immediately.
4️⃣ Do not give food or water – it may have internal injuries.
5️⃣ Keep it warm – shock can cause rapid hypothermia.
6️⃣ Call specialized rescuers – Carabinieri Forestali 1515, Police 113, local Wildlife Rescue Center (CRAS).
7️⃣ If small, place in a box with cloth over the head. If large, mark the location and wait for help.

Even a small action – a cloth and a phone call – can save a wild animal’s life.

I botti e i fuochi d’artificio 🎆 non sono uno “spettacolo innocuo”: negli gli animali 🐶🐱 provocano paura, panico e rischio di fuga o infortuni. Il loro udito è molto più sensibile del nostro e i rumori improvvisi possono scatenare stress intenso, disorientamento e traumi fisici ed emotivi 💔
Non si tratta solo di un momento di paura: ogni anno cani, gatti e altri animali soffrono, fuggono o si feriscono a causa dei fuochi e dei botti dei petardi 🚫
Per rispetto verso chi non può difendersi, scegliamo di festeggiare in modo sicuro 🎉💛✨


Fireworks and firecrackers 🎆 are not a “harmless celebration”: for animals 🐶🐱, they cause fear, panic, and risk of escape or injury. Their hearing is much more sensitive than ours and sudden loud noises can trigger intense stress, disorientation, and physical and emotional trauma 💔
It’s not just a momentary fright: every year dogs, cats, and other animals suffer, run away, or get hurt because of fireworks 🚫
