A life was left to die. But someone heard her cry.
We received a call from Ms. Gayatri from Bhalukhop, who informed us that a dog had been crying continuously through the night in the jhora. She reached out to us, hoping we could rescue her.
One of our members, immediately went to the location.
What she found was nothing short of a scene straight out of a horror film.
The dog had been tied by her legs and mouth, shoved inside a gunny bag, and thrown into the jhora—left there to die.
We later received another call regarding the same dog from Ms. Deepa Chettri of Tamang Cottage, 10.5 Mile, below Biralu Kothi.
Our members managed to rescue her and immediately took her to Goodwill Animal Shelter, Kalimpong, for treatment.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Pandey and his entire team for always standing by us and supporting animals in need. Your compassion and willingness to help, time and again, mean more than words can express.
But tonight, we are left with a question that is difficult to shake off.
How does a human being become capable of this level of cruelty?
What makes someone look at a helpless, living creature and decide that its life has no value?
We often call ourselves an evolved species. We speak about intelligence, progress, compassion and civilisation.
But perhaps true evolution isn’t measured by how advanced we become.
Perhaps it is measured by how gently we treat those who cannot speak for themselves.
Cases like this leave us wondering whether we have simply failed to evolve emotionally—or whether somewhere along the way, we have become so broken inside that we have forgotten how to feel empathy for another living being.
