One evening back in 2018, when I was home alone with Luchi, we were playing in our bedroom and she ended up peeing on our bed. I was so angry, so quick. I thought - she knows she’s not supposed to this. So I yelled at her, “Luchi! What did you do?” and with a very towering, dominating body language, got her to leave the room and kept her outside.

After I had finished cleaning up, I came out and saw her sitting on the couch. The shame of yelling at her had started creeping in so, I
tried to placate her. She looked at me with uncertainty, unsure of me, and turned her head away. That hit me like a load of bricks.

In that moment, I knew something between us had disconnected. But I was so afraid to stay in that moment that pride and ego replaced softness and vulnerability immediately. I chose to misunderstand that for her throwing an ‘attitude’ and let her “sulk” till Arnav came back home later that evening.

It was a defining experience. Not only because it showed me what I was trying to suppress but also because that rupture was one of the many ruptures between us that remained untended to. It was only a few years later that I learnt to recognise those hard moments as ruptures and found the capacity to repair with her - to rebuild trust and connection and safety with each other.

Your relationship with your dog isn’t just personal. It IS political.

Every walk, every choice to pause instead of punish, every moment of attunement is an act of decolonial resistance.

In a world built on domination of land, bodies, time, and emotion, our relationships with dogs often inherit the same logic:

➡️Ownership over kinship
➡️Obedience over autonomy
➡️Efficiency over connection

Empire teaches us to manage, control, and extract from animals, from each other, from the earth.

But your relationship with your dog can be a site of liberation. Not theoretical liberation but quiet, daily, embodied practice.

We have to move beyond the individual and see this as a systemic breakdown.

If we continue to see dogs as commodities who are

Bred without an understanding of genetic and epileptic influences, maternal care, mother-child attachments, the impact of early experiences on cognitive and emotional development;

Raised in homes without any understanding of developmental needs, dog education, canine body language, foundations of relationship building;

Seen as “Disney dogs” as opposed to sentient, dynamic beings with preferences, likes and dislikes, boundaries and agency;

Influenced by advice from professionals across an unregulated industry, some even without an understanding of dogs and their ethogram

Then we will continue to see challenges across rehoming, abandonment and behavioural euthanasia. And both dogs and humans will continue to suffer 💔
