𝑹𝑬𝑴𝑰𝑵𝑫𝑬𝑹❗️
Today is one of the hottest days of the year.
Please make sure your horses have:
💧 Fresh water available at all times.
🌳 Plenty of shade.
🧂 Access to salt or electrolytes if appropriate.
🚿 A chance to cool down if they’re hot.
If you hose a horse down, don’t scrape the water off. Leave it on so it can keep cooling them as it evaporates. Scraping it straight off defeats the purpose.
Watch carefully for signs of heat stress or heat stroke:
• Excessive or prolonged panting.
• Very fast breathing or heart rate.
• Lethargy or weakness.
• Stumbling or looking unsteady.
• Not wanting to move.
• Dark or tacky gums.
• A high temperature.
If you see these signs, cool the horse immediately with plenty of cold water, leave the water on, move them into shade, and contact your vet.
And for goodness’ sake, just give them the day off. That includes this evening. One missed ride, lesson or schooling session is not going to ruin anyone’s future, but heat stroke can kill.
It’s only 7:20 am and I’m already sweltering. The girls are having their salt mash before settling in for the day. They’ll be spending most of it indoors, with access to a small outdoor track with water buffet. Rosie (our guest) is also in another part of the shed for the day! Their welfare comes before my plans. It really is that simple.
