By deepening bonds and increasing our understanding in the world of dogs, we aid people in developing life skills that benefit the wellbeing of both dog and owner. Handsome and intelligent Taz is a 6-month-old rottweiler collie cross. So very proud that I attended and completed Canine First Aid Workshop which was held in the amazing !

Not only was the workshop informative there were practical applications of the knowledge gained (on stuffed and fake dogs of course!).

Basic first aid can be a life saving skill so whether you work with humans, dogs, cats or any other animal do yourself a favour and get yourself to a first aid course!

📣Disclaimer - Get ready for a completely biased, gushing post about a springer. 📣

Siena, the 3-year-old springer spaniel was brought to my attention by their wonderful owner very recently. Poor Siena has always been nervous around strange or new people, and has some deep concerns about other dogs in the outside world too which can leave her feeling afraid.

She finds her peace with her owner and in her garden but lately her nervousness seems to be increasing which is heart breaking for her owner. As a life long, platinum card holder to the Springer fan club this one case has tugged on my already easy to pull heart-strings and has reminded me deeply about what it is to live with and advocate for the best life of another living being.

When our dogs have such big scary emotions our focus will and always should be on creating a safe space where they feel comfortable, safe to regulate and feel supported. While the journey with these emotions make look similar to other journeys it is more of a series of support mechanisms designed help build confidence and counter her fears every skill we teach will ultimately be marked with an intrinsic implication that says to our dogs that no matter what you feel and when you feel it we will always have your back.

Siena has a road in front of her, and I feel honoured that her owner has invited me in to help guide this beautiful girl to a life of contentedness and confidence with her people.

The gorgeous Honey is a puppy that is one in a million. Smart, sharp and knows herself. Multiple times throughout our consultation Honey took herself off for some independent time only to come running excitedly back to flop into a nap.

Like all young newly adopted puppies, Honey is going through a suite of unpredictable changes and sometimes this can be a little scary leading to over stimulation and our pups becoming those little pointed toothed landsharks, hiding around corners ready to pounce at your pant leg.

And like most pups we only need two things to help them adjust and they both fall to us:

1). Consistent guidance on no-nippy play
2). A recognition of the signs of over stimulation and tiredness

Keeping these two in mind prevent accidental nips and teaches our dogs that we are not chew toys.

Honey was super charming, highly intelligent and is one lucky girl to have found a family that care so deeply about her wellbeing and giving her the best life she can have.

Bronagh the 9-month-old lurcher has melted my heart with her doe-like eyes. Bronagh is struggling with not knowing how to act in a given situation with new people/dogs. A lover of all people and dogs Bronagh gets frustrated when on leash and is unable to greet.

While it is always lovely to have a pup that wants to say hello to everyone and everything sometimes these over friendly pups can be misinterpreted by people and dogs alike as aggressive or domineering. The facts are generally far from this. Many pups don't have the time or opportunity to socialise and pick up on proper dog communication so it falls to us to help them develop new skills.

Skills that involve indifference to these triggers and a better ability to handle their frustration by doing something else.

Bronagh responded remarkably well to our first session and we can already see a willingness to learn these new skills. I fully believe that given the commitment to making her life easier Bronagh's family will easily be able to teach this lovely lurcher the frustration management she will need to live a more relaxed and less frenetic life.

Aptly named Lucky, this Yorkshire terrier puppy comes from a very uncommon litter of one otherwise known as a singleton litter.

Being the only puppy in a litter can be interesting as there are behavioural and developmental pieces that these puppies miss out on as part of a bigger litter. The have no brothers and sisters to learn the initial stages of bite inhibition, dog body language, appropriate puppy play, frustration tolerance among many others.

This is not to say that it is impossible to teach a puppy these things but rather that our focuses should more on teaching these ourselves so we have a well adjusted pup in later developmental stages.

Lucky is also an incredibly fortunate pup to have landed with his forever and loving home. Smart, charming and a massive problem solver we saw an amazing level of focus from a pup his age during his session.

Lucky's family are dedicated and understanding that much is obvious and it is clear to me that they are aware of the work involved in raising a well adjusted pup. Like many of the pups I have met before I truly believe Lucky to be one of the special ones and one that if given half a chance could melt hearts.

I am honoured to be part of this young pup's journey.

Coco the King Charles Spaniel was an absolute pleasure to be around. She had a zest for life that was enviable and anyone that came across her would just melt. Look at that little face.

The world is a scary place for puppies; it's big and constantly full of surprises they don't know how to deal with yet. That's why my focus when training pups as young as this is not so much on formal obedience but on guidance and feedback.

Our pups don't know how to act in this world. They're only point of reference is a large bipedal person that can't speak their language so it is vital that we guide our pups through this scary period with kindness patience and empathy.

Coco is in that scary part of her development but with a personality like hers and an intelligence to boot she'll be a star in no time.

Rolo is a dog that is struggling with reactivity and stranger danger.

We spent most of the session speaking about the power of predictability and setting up expectations on what Rolo is to do when someone comes to the home.

To say that I am astounded by how quickly this boy picked up what we were putting down is an understatement.

Predictably is a powerful tool when your dog has big scary emotions. Don't be surprised when your pup starts showing more relaxed tendencies when their routine becomes predictable.

Here's a little fun video on my monthly/weekly/daily/hourly feelings on being a professional in the dog industry.

It's tough going out on your own, re-educating yourself working for yourself and being everything for your business. The invisible hours are uncountable, the work unceasing, the imposter syndrome very VERY real. But I have never felt so connected to another species in my life.

The more I learn about the dog and dogs in front of me the more I see how all this applies to not only us but to all living things. Do I have my bad days? Of course! Am I worried I'll be able to sustain this? Absolutely!

Will I pack this in? No, never, not a chance! I love what I do despite the trails and tribulations. I'll always want to do this.

As the month of Co-operative care draws to a close. I find myself reflecting on the month that's just gone by. It's been a tough one and one that I threw myself body and soul into. I have identified many MANY limitations with the video series but like the series itself I cannot hope to input all these into a single reflection video.

Let's just say that the ways, the tips, the situations and the how to of co-operative care are as varied as there are breeds of dog. This is not a one size fits all and the series barely scuffs the surface of the knowledge I contain.

There are depths unplumbed and skills not mentioned so this will act solely as an introduction to the skills and maybe later (much later....I'm so tired) I can dedicate more videos to an intermediate level!
