I have been thinking about writing this for a while, based on my own observations.
Junior handlers should be the future of dog shows. However, some of the attitudes I have witnessed are, in my view, completely unacceptable. At times, there can be rudeness, arrogance, and a lack of basic social skills. Some young people who come from strong dog show families can appear entitled, as though winning is everything and the world revolves around the next rosette.
I do not place all the blame on them. Young people learn from the environment around them, and many simply reflect what they see from adults. When success in the ring becomes the sole focus, it can create the impression that winning is more important than sportsmanship, respect, or personal development.
One thing that concerns me is the culture that can develop around dog shows. For some people, showing dogs seems to become their entire identity. In my view, dog showing should be a hobby and a passion, not something that defines a person's worth or status.
Young handlers would benefit from being exposed to a wider range of experiences beyond the dog show world. Learning basic life skills, good manners, humility, and respect for others is just as important as learning how to present a dog in the ring.
It is also worth remembering that winning, wearing expensive clothes, or presenting a certain image does not make anyone better than anyone else. Dignity, kindness, and respect for other people are what truly matter. Those qualities are the greatest accessories any of us can carry, both inside and outside the show ring.
