𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐏: Misty Rehder is accused of allowing at least 25 sled dogs to die from prolonged neglect at a kennel in Alaska. Prosecutors allege the dogs suffered severe starvation, dehydration, and untreated medical conditions. She faces multiple felony animal cruelty charges, making it one of the most significant sled dog cruelty cases in recent Alaska history. The case has become a focal point for advocates seeking stronger welfare protections for sled dogs and the repeal of legal exemptions that they argue have allowed neglect to persist.

𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: The prosecutor has successfully requested a review of Misty Rehder’s bail conditions, and the court has scheduled a bail hearing for today at 11:00 a.m. in Palmer.

According to court filings, Rehder was taken back into custody after allegedly violating the conditions of her house arrest. Reports indicate she was observed at unauthorized locations, including a Fred Meyer store, and her electronic monitoring provider reportedly notified authorities that she had traveled to locations not approved under the terms of her release.

In addition, the Municipality of Anchorage filed a new criminal charge against Rehder on August 4. While details of the charge were initially unavailable, an arraignment has been scheduled for September at the Nesbett Courthouse in Anchorage.

Today, prosecutors are seeking stricter release conditions, including reinstatement of a third-party custodian requirement that was removed when her bail was previously reduced from $25,000 to $5,000.

Those interested in following the case are encouraged to attend the hearing today. The proceedings will determine whether Rehder’s bail conditions should be modified in light of the alleged violations and the newly filed Anchorage charge.

This talk covers the birth of the Iditarod, what it took to run it, the fight to preserve a piece of mushing history, and everything in between.
