Iโ€™m in beautiful Bristol this week for five days of practical dog training and behaviour with Roz Pooley, The Mutty Professor.

After attending Rozโ€™s two-day dog-to-dog reactivity seminar at the Kennel Club last year, I couldnโ€™t wait for the opportunity to spend five days learning from her and being mentored.

Weโ€™ve been exploring the whys and hows behind practical exercises, observing dogs and their communication, watching Roz work and getting hands-on with dogs ourselves.

A big thank you to Rozโ€™s customers who have kindly let us learn by watching them and their dogs working through dog-to-dog challenges. Thereโ€™s so much to take away from seeing that learning happen in front of you.

I absolutely love learning, especially when I can bring that knowledge back to help you and your dogs. This week is also supporting my studies towards my Level 6 Clinical Behaviour qualification.

We transformed a plain, grey, dingy old space into a bright, colourful hive of activity, filled with all things doggy.

From puppy and adolescent classes to recall and loose lead courses, scent detection workshops, Gundog for Pet Dogs, Rally and a touch of Hoopers โ€” weโ€™ve made so many lovely memories and friends along the way.

Itโ€™s been amazing, and weโ€™ve loved helping each and every dog and their owners. Thank you to everyone who has been part of it.

Believe it or not, this lovely girl is still only a puppy! Margot is a five-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, and sheโ€™s still got plenty of growing to do.

Iโ€™ve been working with Margot and her incredibly dedicated owner for a few weeks now. Sheโ€™s doing so well with her training and the everyday life skills that will help her as she grows up.

Weโ€™ve practised at the park, around Easingwold and, this week, at BATA garden centre. Each visit gives Margot a chance to practise staying calm, checking in with her owners and making good choices around new people and distractions, all at a pace she can manage.

A big thank you to the wonderful staff at BATA, who are always happy to offer a doggy cuddle or help us practise focusing with a friendly distraction! ๐Ÿพ

Rover, a beautiful Collie cross, had been with his new family for around four months. When they rehomed him, they had no idea he was reactive towards other dogsโ€”but over time, his reactivity began to escalate, making walks more challenging and stressful.

We then moved on to real-life outdoor sessions, applying everything at a pace that was safe, supportive and manageable.

Absolutely not. Iโ€™d scream, shout and desperately try to escape. If I couldnโ€™t, I might eventually shut downโ€”but that wouldnโ€™t mean I felt safe.

The same is true for our dogs. When pushed too close to something they fear, their nervous system can go into ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ, ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ณ๐ž.

Yesterday, I managed to catch a sizeable house spider using a humane spider catcherโ€”and I can now look at one without my nervous system going into complete meltdown. That progress has come through ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž, ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐žโ€”not being overwhelmed.
