After my cats diagnosis and surgery, thought I’d talk a little about FLUTD.

🐾 FLUTD / FIC in Cats – Important Health Information 🐾

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), including Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), is a common condition affecting the bladder and lower urinary tract in cats.

Clinical signs may include:
• Straining to urinate
• Frequent visits to the litter tray
• Passing small amounts of urine or inappropriate urination
• Vocalisation or signs of discomfort
• Blood in urine

⚠️ In male cats, urinary obstruction can develop rapidly and is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention.

In cases of FIC, no underlying infection or urinary stones are identified. Current evidence suggests a strong link between environmental stress, hydration status, and routine disruption.

Supportive management may include:
• Increased water intake (wet diets, water fountains, additional hydration support)
• Environmental enrichment and stress reduction
• Consistent routines and appropriate litter tray provision
• Veterinary-directed pain relief and dietary management where indicated

Early recognition and prompt veterinary assessment are essential for a positive outcome.

Keeping Your Pets Cool and Safe in Hot Weather ☀️🐾

As temperatures climb, protecting our pets from heat stress and heatstroke becomes essential. Here’s what every owner should know to keep their furry friends comfortable and safe:

Hydration is vital. Make sure pets always have access to fresh, clean water. Adding ice cubes can help keep water cooler for longer. 💧❄️

Exercise during cooler times of day only — early mornings or late evenings. Hot pavement and tarmac can burn paws, so if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet! 🐾🔥

Provide plenty of shade and good airflow. Whether indoors or outdoors, a well-ventilated, shaded spot can make all the difference. Fans or air conditioning are great if available. 🌳💨

Never leave pets in parked cars — even with windows cracked, temperatures can become deadly within minutes. 🚗❌

Grooming helps with temperature regulation. Regular brushing removes excess fur and helps air circulate. But be cautious about shaving double-coated breeds (like Huskies or Golden Retrievers). Their coats protect against sunburn and help regulate body temperature, so shaving can sometimes do more harm than good. Consult a professional groomer or vet before clipping. ✂️🐕

Consider using cooling mats, vests, or bandanas designed for pets. These products absorb and retain coolness, providing relief during outdoor activities or rest times. 🧊🦮

Frozen pet-safe treats, like ice cubes with bits of fruit or broth inside, are a delicious way to help pets cool down and stay hydrated. 🍉❄️🍗

Watch closely for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or collapse. This is a medical emergency — move your pet to a cooler area, offer small amounts of cool water, and contact your vet immediately. ⚠️🐶🐱📞
