One of the best things we can give a young puppy is time around good, experienced dogs.

Dogs who show them how to play, how to communicate, and most importantly when to switch off.

A pretty lovely end to Lily’s first day at The Dog Club. 🤎

Arthur joined The Dog Club last week, five and a half months old, full of energy and very new to spending time off lead within a group of dogs.

I thought it would be interesting to bring you along and show what my process of introducing at 11 Acres actually looks like over the next few weeks.

It isn’t going to be a dog-training series, but hopefully there’ll be a few useful ideas along the way for anyone trying to raise a happy, socially confident dog.

Follow along and let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to cover!

There’s something special about ending the week with moments like this.

Knowing the dogs can spend their days exploring, playing and living fully but feel safe enough here at The Dog Club to make themselves completely at home, too.

Proud to have a daycare that looks like this.
I think the dogs are pretty proud of it too.

What does a modern dog actually need to live a fulfilled life?

It’s something I think about a lot, and it’s shaped pretty much everything I’ve built at 11 Acres.

Dogs live incredibly different lives now compared with what many of them were originally bred for. We’ve changed their world completely, but their instincts haven’t disappeared with it.

And I think sometimes we make dog care more complicated than it needs to be.

That’s easy for me to say. I spend my days inside my little 11 Acres bubble — an environment I’ve been able to shape specifically around dogs and their needs.

But I also see the huge amount of information online. Different techniques, different beliefs, different opinions on what we should and shouldn’t be doing with our dogs. It can make something that should be relatively simple feel incredibly complicated.

For me, it isn’t about endlessly trying to tire a dog out or filling every minute of their day with stimulation.

It’s about understanding the dog in front of you.

What were they bred to do? What do they naturally enjoy? What gives them purpose? Can they switch off afterwards? Do they understand what’s expected of them?

That’s why things like breed-specific outlets, proper rest, routine, boundaries and training are such a big part of what I do.

The more structure I give dogs, the more freedom I’m ultimately able to give them.

These ideas have gradually become the foundations of how I’ve built life at 11 Acres.

So I decided to go back to my academic routes and write them down.

Foundations is my free 15-page article to raising calm, confident and fulfilled dogs.

It’s completely free. Have a read, take whatever is useful to you and ignore whatever isn’t.

And genuinely, if you do read it, please let me know what you think. If there’s something you’d like me to go into in more detail or you’d simply like more of my thoughts written down like this — let me know. I might make it a regular thing.
