Throwback to last year... Panic mode!! 😩
Nixie was absolutely fine, thankfully but this could have been very bad!!
🕸️🕷️ When your spider is moulting 🕷️🕸️
Leave the hammock alone. Don't open it, pull it apart or try to check whether your spider is alive unless there are genuine signs of an emergency.
Avoid handling or moving the enclosure unnecessarily. Keep vibrations and sudden disturbances to a minimum.
Maintain its normal environmental conditions. Provide appropriate humidity and ventilation for the species without soaking the hammock or making the enclosure excessively wet.
Don't offer food during the moult. Wait until your spider has emerged, recovered and its fangs have darkened before offering prey. The exact recovery time varies with the spider's age and the size of the moult.
Be patient! Your spider may remain tucked away for days, and sometimes longer, before emerging. It may also stay hidden for a while after moulting while its new exoskeleton hardens.
One important thing to remember: a spider that looks completely motionless inside its hammock isn't necessarily in trouble. Moulting and recovery can take a long time, and interfering when everything is progressing normally can do more harm than good. 🕷️💜
