🥳 12-Month Cohabitation Observation 🥳 Millipedes & Armadillidium Assimile Isopods.
After 12 months of carefully observing a mixed-species setup, I’m pleased to share some very positive results regarding the cohabitation of multiple millipede species alongside Armadillidium Assimile isopods.
The following species have successfully shared a large, well-established enclosure:
🤍Ivory Millipedes
🖤Black Fire Millipedes
💛Bumblebee Millipedes
❤️Red Spined Millipedes
💚Armadillidium assimile Isopods
Since upgrading from separate enclosures to one spacious, monitored habitat, breeding success has significantly improved. Successful reproduction has been observed in all millipede species listed above except the Red Spined Millipedes so far. The Assimile Isopods have also bred successfully.
🔍Shared Environmental Range Observed:
A stable overlap zone appears to work well for all species involved:
• Temperature: 22–25°C ideal, with 20–27°C generally tolerated when stable.
• Humidity: Moderately high humidity with a moisture gradient, roughly equivalent to 70–85%.
• One side of the enclosure kept consistently moist, with drier and more ventilated areas available elsewhere.
• Deep substrate remaining damp below the surface while allowing some upper areas to dry slightly.
🔍Positive Findings Observed
• Peaceful coexistence with no notable disturbance between species.
• ‘Assimile’ display a slower growth rate and moderate breeding pace compared with many other isopod species, helping avoid rapid overpopulation.
• Isopods naturally contribute to enclosure cleanliness by consuming waste materials and naturally recycling nutrients.
• Their activity helps aerate the substrate, reducing stagnant areas and assisting with enclosure health.
• Natural burrows, crevices, and movement through cork bark and decomposing matter appear beneficial to the overall environment.
Important Notes 📝
• These are personal observations based on one enclosure over a 12-month period and should not be taken as professional care guidance.
• Results may vary depending on enclosure size, species ratios, diet, moisture levels, substrate depth, and overall husbandry.
• Adequate supplemental feeding is important. In this setup, regular protein sources such as fish flakes, invertebrate protein mixes, vegetables, and occasional boiled egg have been offered.
• Millipedes, juveniles, and eggs have remained unharmed under these specific conditions.
Final Thoughts 💭 🧠
Based on this experience, Armadillidium Assimile appears to be a promising cohabitation option for selected millipede species when provided with sufficient space, food, and close monitoring.
Always research thoroughly and observe your animals closely when trialling any mixed-species setup, I know it’s a scary thing to do but the results can be very rewarding!
Stay Blessed!
