On todayβs episode of 1-1 Training Jenny Man | Holistic Groomer, Asian Fusion Pet Stylist πΆ
I was joined by Louise and Rosie π€© Louise has just acquired her L3 qualification and was keen to build on her knowledge and hands on experience. Rosie is Louiseβs own dog, and what Iβm grateful for on our day together was the fact that Rosie was uncooperative.
What may seem undesirable (for a lot of groomers) is a fidgety, unrelaxed, moving dog - especially under training conditions. Rosie, however, wasnβt emotionally shut down; she was constantly communicating with us, which gives us considerable information on how we can adjust and help to support her better.
Itβs a reality of working with live, thinking, feeling, emotional animals. Some can find grooming more challenging than others.
In these scenarios, itβs always better to give dogs space, time off the table, and allow them to self-regulate their nervous system. The worst thing to do is to continue flooding dogs with more triggers by carrying on as normal and then go on to restrict their movement - this can force dogs to enter fight or flight mode and it rarely teaches them to cope with the process better.
A communicating dog provides opportunity for us to be better handlers, become better at understanding and anticipating their needs, they teach us to be patient and empathetic, to respect their pace and consider how they experience us.
A perfectly groomed dog is never the goal; a happy dog and a groomer who is pushed to learn should always be the goal.
We got to put in basic shapes on Rosie and we finished the day with a happy pup, an inspired groomer and lighter pockets - Louise found new equipmemt to invest in (I promise theyβre worth it) but Iβm also so happy you got to try them in a real working environment first!
