Right, help me choose the colours… 😂🐾

Those of you who have visited Lilly’s know how much effort we put into keeping your lovely furry members of the family safe.

Double gates.
Proper GPS monitors.
Engraved ID tags.
Lilly’s collars with our contact number in BIG numbers on them.

And now… Paw ID smart tags too.

We’ve been testing a couple of different smart ID systems over the past two weeks, and Paw ID wins hands down for us.

It’s beautifully simple:

Scan the tag → the dog’s profile opens → press to contact us.

You can also add emergency contacts, photos, allergies and vet details.

And importantly, you don’t need a subscription for it to be a brilliant service. There is an optional Premium tier if you want extra features, but the standard service already does an awful lot.

I had a really good chat with Dom from Paw ID today too, talking through home boarding, how we actually work in practice and some extra safety features that could be brilliant to add in future. Lots of exciting ideas to come. 😊

So… now for the really serious question.

What colours should we put on the Lilly’s collars?!

Blue matches beautifully.
I LOVE the green.
And I still have a soft spot for the original pinky-orange. 😂

We took Nellie to the Wolverton show today. So lovely to meet Gemma from Le Chien Bakery and Hannah from Happy Hound Artisan Bakery. Both make gorgeous dog treats here on the Island.

Nellie thinks they are top notch, and our girls thoroughly agree as we brought some home for them to try.

Why didn’t we take our two girls? Well, Honey is a sensitive lass and is easily overwhelmed, so for her it’s actually better to be left at home for a couple of hours. Pixie stayed to keep her company.

Well… I wasn’t expecting our first PawID order quite so soon! 😂🐾

I originally found these smart tags because I wanted them for Honey and Pixie. I’m still putting them through their paces before making too much noise about them, but so far I’ve been really happy with the stability of the system.

I’ve also been speaking directly with the owner of PawID, who has been incredibly open to ideas and suggestions, which has been very reassuring.

So, I quietly added the option to our booking form, mainly because I figured that if I wanted this extra layer of safety for my girls, I should make it available to you chaps too.

And our first order came in almost immediately!

Both tags are for the same stylish little chap, who has an extensive wardrobe and naturally needs one to coordinate with each outfit… 🥰😂

They’re now winging their way through the post, along with a little treat, of course! 🐶📮

These treats work beautifully for the dogs staying with us at the moment…but are so easily adapted to suit other dietary requirements.

Add a spoonful of plain kefir yoghurt

Pop in a strawberry slice and a few dog treats

Mash fresh strawberries 🍓

Mix goat’s milk powder with water

Stir in the mashed strawberries

Pour into the moulds

Add the handles and freeze 🧊

A cooling little treat
with no nasties 🐶🍓

(Yes, we do have a dog only freezer 😂😂😂)

You know we’re all about safety here at Lilly’s, so I’ve been testing a couple of different smart ID tags on our own dogs before deciding what, if anything, I’m happy to recommend to clients.

Pixie is trying Paw ID. 🐾

The idea is really simple: scan the tag, her profile opens, and the finder can quickly contact us. You can also add emergency numbers, photos, allergies and vet details. These would be used in addition to your engraved tag, which is a legal requirement in the UK.

What I like about this one is that although the tag costs a little more upfront, lots of useful features that are often hidden behind a subscription are included without an ongoing fee.

Honey is testing a different system, which I’ll show you another day 😁😘

I’ve got a couple here at home too, so if any of our existing clients would like to have a proper look before deciding whether to buy one, you’re very welcome to. 😊

What happens to dog food when it is cooked?

Whether our dogs eat kibble, food from a tin or tray, gently cooked meals or raw food, it all begins with ingredients.

But those ingredients can be changed significantly by what happens next.

Cooking has some very important benefits.

It destroys harmful bacteria, makes many ingredients easier to digest and helps make food safer. Heating also unfolds, or “denatures”, proteins, allowing digestive enzymes to reach them more easily.

So cooking does not simply destroy protein. Moderate cooking can actually make protein more digestible.

However, temperature is only part of the story.

How hot the food becomes, how long it is heated, the amount of moisture present and whether it is cooked more than once can all affect the finished food.

One of the changes that can happen during heating is called the Maillard reaction.

This is the reaction between proteins and sugars that creates browning, flavour and those tempting cooked aromas. It is the same reason toast browns and roasted food smells so appealing.

But it can also change the nutritional value of the food.

During the Maillard reaction, certain amino acids can bind to sugars. Lysine, an essential amino acid that dogs must obtain from their food, is particularly vulnerable.

The protein may still be included within the “crude protein” figure on the label, but some of that lysine may no longer be available for the dog to use.

Further reactions can also produce substances called advanced glycation end-products, or AGEs.

That doesn’t mean all cooked food is harmful, and it certainly doesn’t mean raw food is automatically better.

Some processing improves safety and digestibility. More intensive or repeated processing can cause greater changes. The original ingredients, temperature, cooking time, moisture and storage all matter.

That is why the percentage of protein printed on a packet cannot tell us the whole story.

The more useful question is not simply:

“How much protein is in it?”

It is:

“How much of that protein can the dog digest, absorb and use?”

Over the coming weeks, we’ll look at how this differs between kibble, tins, trays, pouches, gently cooked food, raw food and some of the newer alternatives.
