๐พ 14th October โ Pet Obesity Awareness Day ๐ถโ๏ธ
A few extra kilos might not look like a big problem, but for your dog, they can make a big difference!
Obesity isn't just about appearance. Being overweight can increase the risk of joint problems, diabetes, breathing difficulties and other health conditions. It can also affect your dog's mobility and overall quality of life.
๐ How can you help your dog maintain a healthy weight?
๐พ Check their body condition. You should generally be able to feel their ribs easily without pressing too hard, and see a waist when looking from above.
๐ฅ Be careful with treats. Training treats count towards their daily calorie intake too! Try using small pieces or part of their normal food allowance.
๐ฅฃ Measure their meals. Feeding guidelines are only a starting point. Every dog has different needs depending on their age, activity level and health.
๐ Keep them active. Regular walks, appropriate exercise and mental stimulation are important, but always consider your dog's physical abilities.
๐ฉบ Speak to your vet. If you're concerned about your dog's weight, ask for a body condition assessment and a suitable weight management plan.
And remember, overweight dogs don't always look obviously overweight!
As a dog trainer with a qualification in Canine Nutrition, I always encourage owners to look at the bigger picture. Food, exercise, behaviour and health are all connected.
๐ A healthy weight isn't about having a perfect-looking dog. It's about helping them live a healthier, happier and more comfortable life.
๐ฌ Do you regularly check your dog's weight and body condition?
