Celebrating our clients’ summer successes! 🥳

We always enjoy hearing about the achievements of our clients and their horses and ponies. Here are just a few recent successes that have been shared with us.

🏆 Oakley and Flicka 🏆
In Mounted Games, Oakley and Flicka finished 3rd at the World Individual Championships Under 12s at Luhmühlen, Germany, and 2nd at the European Under 12s Individual Championships at la Bonde, France. Oakley was also part of the winning pair who took the World Champion title at Espace Equestrian Centre, Corne, France. 👏

🐴 Katie Bainbridge and Jack Daniel’s🐴
In eventing Katie is pictured competing at the UK Pony Club Championships at Offchurch Bury, Warwickshire, with her fantastic 21-year-old chestnut, Jack Daniel’s. Katie finished in the top twenty.👏

🏇 Daisy Walker and Gold Rush 🏇
Daisy is pictured celebrating with her brother and father after🥇winning the 138cm Pony Race at Worcester Racecourse with Gold Rush her 4th consecutive win on this pony!

🐴☀️With this unprecedented period of very dry weather we are all very aware of how hard the ground has become. 🙁

Rock hard ground — means more concussion through your horse’s hooves, joints, tendons and ligaments.🦵

🐎 It can also make hooves drier and less flexible, reducing their ability to absorb shock. 🐴

🧲⚠️ Signs your horse may be struggling:
• Shorter or “pottery” stride
• Stiffness or tension
• Sore/bruised soles
• Knocking fences or refusing to jump
• Heat or swelling in the legs after exercise

💡 Help reduce the risk:
🌱 Choose softer ground where possible
🏇Avoid lots of fast work on hard surfaces
⚖️ Keep your horse at a healthy weight
🧲 Stay on top of hoof care
💦 Hose or ice legs after work
🏇 Adapt your training to the conditions

Remember: hard ground doesn’t mean you can’t ride — but it does mean being sensible about how, where and how much you work your horse.

🐴 Listen to your horse and adjust accordingly!

🦷 Big or small, we rasp them all! 🐴

When was the last time your horse or pony had their teeth checked?

Regular dental examinations are an important part of maintaining your horse's health, comfort and performance. We recommend the following routine check-ups:

🐴 Under 5 years of age: Every 6 months
🐴 5–18 years of age: Every 12 months
🐴 Over 18 years of age: Every 6 months

Keep an eye out for signs that your horse or pony may need veterinary attention sooner:

🔹 Quidding – dropping food from the mouth whilst eating.
🔹 Bad breath – an unpleasant smell coming from the mouth.
🔹 Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition.
🔹 Discomfort when wearing a bridle or accepting the bit.

Routine dental examinations help identify problems early and keep your horse comfortable, happy and performing at their best.

Whatever their age, don't forget to book your horse or pony in for their routine dental check.

🐴🌳 An interesting recent case of hives following exercise! 🌳🐛

We recently treated a horse that developed hives (urticaria) on two separate occasions suddenly after being ridden. 😣 Each episode was accompanied by intense itching, and hosing the horse with cold water 💦 provided significant relief.

On the third occasion, however, the reaction was much more severe. 🚨 It became apparent that the horse had come into contact with something during exercise.

🟢 The oak processionary moth caterpillar is what we considered, but in our area it is the Brown tail moth, which has similar irritating hairs.🐛 These caterpillars are covered in thousands of tiny barbed hairs containing a toxic protein. The hairs break off very easily and can be carried by the wind. When they come into contact with the skin, they pe*****te it and release an irritating substance that can cause severe itching, hives and inflammation in both humans and animals. Some individuals are far more sensitive than others.

💡 So, what can you do?
👨‍⚕️ In people, sticky tape is sometimes recommended to remove the hairs—but that's obviously not practical for horses! 😅

💦 Instead, thoroughly hose the affected areas with plenty of water. Avoid using a sponge, as this may push the hairs closer to the skin rather than washing them away.

📸 As you can see from the photos, this horse experienced a widespread reaction. Fortunately, with appropriate veterinary treatment 💉 to reduce the hives and relieve the itching, he made an excellent recovery and is now back to his happy, comfortable self! ❤️🐴

The Browntail moth is found in our surrounding areas and the caterpillar season between April - July, so hopefully this will all come to an end soon! 🙏

⚠️ If your horse suddenly develops hives, severe itching or swelling after being ridden or turned out—especially around oak trees during processionary moth season 🌳🐛—contact your veterinary surgeon as soon as possible.

Some useful tips from the British Horse Society during this period of hot weather. ☀️

Hot weather is on the way. Here’s how to help your horse stay comfortable ☀️

With temperatures expected to rise across the UK this week, now is a good time to check your horse’s hot weather care.

A few simple steps can make a big difference:

💧 Make sure your horse always has access to clean, fresh water. A 500kg horse may drink 50–70 litres (4-6 buckets) a day in hot weather.

🌳 Provide shade or shelter, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

🪰 Help protect against flies with fly masks, repellents and regular poo-picking.

🧴 Use sun protection for horses with pink skin or white/grey hair, especially their noses.

🌡️ Know the signs that your horse may be struggling, including lethargy, dark urine, reduced droppings, fast breathing, nostril flaring, or slow recovery after exercise.

If you think your horse may be showing signs of heat-related illness, contact your vet immediately. Move them into shade, offer water, and begin cooling by continuously applying cold water over their body while help is on the way.
