CATNIP RETRIEVE, there’s more going on than simply fetching a toy
Our Catnip Retrieve is built around a simple principle, work with the dog’s natural behaviour rather than trying to manufacture motivation from nothing.
Dogs are naturally equipped to search, investigate, locate, grab and carry. Research into canine predatory behaviour describes linked behavioural phases including searching, approaching, chasing and biting, with other literature also identifying carrying or possession within these behavioural patterns.

So our end goal isn’t simply:
“Go and fetch this.”
We build:
🐾 SEARCH LOCATE the catnip odour
🐾 INTERACT and take possession
🐾 BUILD value and confidence
🐾 RETRIEVE

That distinction can be particularly important for dogs who aren’t naturally enthusiastic retrievers, dogs with lower toy motivation, or dogs who need more confidence to interact with objects.

And there is some fascinating research around the searching part.
Olfactory searching is a species typical behaviour for dogs, and a major review of canine olfaction describes sniffing and searching for odours as important natural behaviours.
One study comparing nosework with heelwork found that dogs doing nosework subsequently showed a more positive judgement bias, often described as increased optimism. The researchers highlighted two particularly interesting ingredients, allowing dogs to perform a natural behaviour and giving them greater autonomy and opportunity to make choices.
A 2025 scientific review looked at 27 studies involving scent activities and dogs. It found growing evidence around the behavioural and physiological effects of scent activities, while also pointing out that considerably more research is needed before we make big claims about their welfare effects.
And this is why the UCS Catnip Retrieve isn’t just a retrieve exercise.
We’re using SEARCH to help create the journey to the retrieve.
For some dogs the retrieve is already hugely reinforcing.
For others, we need to help them discover why the game is worth playing.
Find the motivation. Build the confidence. Develop the behaviour. Then build the retrieve.

🐾 CPD, UCS style…
Yesterday our UCS instructors got together for a CPD day, and what better classroom than an entire football club? ⚽🐕
Different spaces, different surfaces, different search problems and plenty of opportunities to get the dogs, and the humans, thinking.
Because good Scent Detection isn’t about repeating the same searches until the dog gets really good at them.

It’s about understanding why something happens.
Why did the dog miss that area?
Was it odour movement? Search pattern? Motivation? Handler position? Environment?
What can we change?
And what happens if we make the problem slightly different? And dodgy smoke machines?🥴

That’s a huge part of CPD within UCS.

Getting instructors together, sharing ideas, watching different dogs work, questioning what we see, troubleshooting and continuing to develop our understanding.

There’s always more to learn, and sometimes you need to get out of the classroom and onto the football pitch to find it. ⚽👃🐾
