Anyone else have a reactive dog?
I took this picture last night while feeling incredibly proud of him (and maybe myself a little too). I was planning on sharing a story about how far Finn has come with his training recently. I felt like it was the perfect walk - he was responsive, engaged and had just been doing amazing from the second we left the house.
We had seen several dogs by the time I took this photo, and instead of his usual frustration at wanting to go and greet them, pulling or throwing himself around he was looking, before focusing back on me. I was in shock, I kept looking at my partner smiling and saying ‘look how far he’s come!’
Well, the walk home was a different story…
Finn saw a dog who has been reactive to him in the past a little way ahead. All the focus and engagement we had previously were gone. He began pulling, spinning, up on two legs. It took me a few minutes to calm him down enough to continue. As we turned onto our street, he saw a squirrel, and again became incredibly frustrated. We got him back to the house, gave him some enrichment to wind down and I felt deflated.
However, the more I thought about it, the more guilty I felt for feeling that way. He did do amazing, he walked out of the house and immediately saw another dog and refocused. He watched a dog walking past on the opposite side of the road and stayed sat the entire time. Was it a perfect walk? No. Could it have been better? Yes. Could I have done better to prevent it? Maybe… but regardless, just a few months ago, the entire walk would have been hoping we don’t run into anyone. He’s grown so much and I will always be incredibly proud of him.
With our reactive dogs it’s so important to focus on those positives, while remembering there may always be days where they feel overwhelmed by something, and that’s okay.
Anyone else had walks like this?
