Whether you are experienced or new or starting out?

Do read this and save it. The queens latest gate is 8 in GCCF though.

You have a duty of care as a breeder and there is a Code of Practice that has been designed to be a highly useful reference document although this is not an official GCCF document it is useful

A reminder to breeders: responsibility doesn’t end when a kitten leaves your home

Breeding a litter is a commitment that extends far beyond the day a kitten goes to their new home. Responsible breeders should be there to provide support, advice and guidance throughout the cat’s life - including if circumstances change and an owner is no longer able to care for them.

We understand that life can change and that it may not always be possible for a breeder to take a cat back themselves. However, breeders should make sure prospective owners understand what support will be available if they ever find themselves in this situation.

Responsible breeding includes:

🐾 Being available to provide appropriate support and advice throughout a cat’s lifetime.

🐾 Discussing with prospective owners what will happen if their circumstances change and they can no longer keep their cat.

🐾 Offering help with rehoming wherever possible.

🐾 Where appropriate, taking a cat back or helping to identify a safe and suitable alternative home.

🐾 Working with reputable rescue organisations where a breeder is unable to take a cat back themselves.

🐾 Continuing to put the welfare of the cat first, long after the original sale has taken place.

A cat may be four, five or even ten years old, but they are still a kitten that you bred. Their welfare remains important.

This is also something prospective kitten owners should consider before bringing a kitten home.

Ask the breeder: “What would happen if I could no longer keep this cat?”

A responsible breeder should be able to explain what support they would offer and what steps they would recommend if circumstances changed.

Buying a kitten is a long-term commitment - and choosing a breeder who understands that commitment is an important part of giving your new cat the best possible start in life. ❤️

Very important information when registering your new litter from a queen you have bought in.

Very important information when registering your new litter from a queen you have bought in.

It has recently come to our attention that there has been an increase in breeders registering litters where the ownership of the breeding Queen has not been transferred into their name until after the date of birth of the litter.

This creates a flag on our system and means that the litter cannot be processed without it being registered into the previous owner’s name. In order to backdate the transfer of ownership, we are required to obtain proof of the date of which the cat was sold or transferred to the new owner.

This additional process can cause significant delays to litter registrations.

To help avoid unnecessary delays, please ensure that the transfer of ownership for your breeding Queen is completed before the birth of any litter you wish to register. If the Queen has already been transferred to you, but the ownership transfer was not completed before the litter was born, please ensure you have proof of the date the cat was sold readily available (this should be a sales contract or a receipt - we cannot accept text messages etc).

Taking care of the ownership transfer at the correct time will help us process your litter registration as quickly and smoothly as possible 🐾
