Puppies are great! Full of energy, mischief and wee.

🐶Puppyhood is an important time in a dog's life not only in terms of socialisation and training but in physical growth and development.

Many puppy parents don't realise that injuries and microtrauma sustained at this time lead to arthritis once the dog is older (this can be as young as 2yrs old!)

Of course bumps and falls are a natural part of a growing puppy learning about the world and their body but we should be careful not to introduce any additional trauma.

What reasonable steps can we take?

🐾No playing on slippery surfaces - if you have hard floors it's worth investing in grippy mats where the puppy plays.

🐾Be careful with ball play - Fast running, stopping and quick turns all put a lot of stress on young joints and growth plates.

🐾Limit jumping down from the bed/ sofa/ car - even once they are fully grown, the forequarters of a dog are not designed for this sort of trauma. If you have a large breed puppy then now is the time to train them to use a ramp or steps.

🐾Don't tire your puppy out - this is when injuries happen.

Your puppy of course disagrees with me but look after their bodies and you're less likely to need me in years to come!

It's national dog day! (As if every day isn't dog day)

A day to celebrate our full time best friends and part time trouble makers.

What better way to show you care than with massage? For more days of mischievous athleticism!

Everyone's favourite topic the sloppy sit!

Cute? Yes. Concerning? Also yes

Normal in puppies but not in adult dogs (there are some breeds which can't sit properly & this is considered normal but that's a topic for another day)

Dogs don't think about their actions, when they sit down they use the easiest & most energy efficient action available. The joints should flex the correct amount & in the right direction direction until the bottom meets the floor.

If your dog has a mad looking sit then we have to ask ourselves why doing this is easier for them than simply bending their joints & sitting correctly.

Just like the sit itself, the reasons for a compromised sit can vary greatly, from relatively benign to requiring veterinary intervention. You might think it's all about joints and their mobility but the body is a complex unit of interwoven tissues which all affect one another.

Massage helps to free up your dog's tissues so they are able to glide across one another, relieves discomfort and stimulates the nervous system, so we can go from:
