🚨 HOW TO PREVENT COLIC THIS SPRING 🚨

While we’re all enjoying the warmer weather and the return of that beautiful green grass, this time of year brings an increased risk of Spasmodic and Gas Colic.

As the spring flush hits, the sudden switch from dry hay to lush, sugar-rich grass can upset your horse’s hindgut. Our team at Exmoor Equine Clinic are already seeing a rise in cases — so here’s how you can stay one step ahead 👇

🕒 The "Slow & Steady" Approach
A horse’s digestive system thrives on routine — sudden changes are where problems begin.

✔️ Transition slowly – increase turnout by just 30–60 minutes per day
✔️ Don’t ditch the hay – feed before turnout to prevent gorging
✔️ Strip graze – limit access to rich pasture using electric fencing

💧 The Hydration Trap
Lush grass contains a lot of water, which can mean your horse actually drinks less — increasing the risk of impaction colic.

✔️ Keep water troughs clean and fresh
✔️ Consider soaking hay for horses that don’t drink well

🚩 Know the Signs
Spotting colic early can make all the difference. Contact us immediately if you notice:

🔸 Pawing or restless pacing
🔸 Repeatedly lying down and getting up
🔸 Looking at or biting their flanks
