One of the biggest mistakes I see owners making when using an e-collar is not checking they have good, consistent contact before starting e-collar conditioning or before letting their dog off lead. 👌

Before unclipping the lead, always check you have good e-collar contact.

A properly fitted collar ensures your communication is clear and consistent when it matters most. If contact is poor, your dog may not receive the cue you’ve trained, which can lead to confusion and unreliable recall.

Notice how the dog’s response to the e-collar created engagement with the handler, this is a great sign that proper, ethical conditioning has been trained. When conditioned correctly, the e-collar becomes a clear communication tool that encourages the dog to seek guidance and remain engaged even with high level distractions.

This is especially important when working on recall training around distractions, wildlife, or for dogs with high prey drive.

Prong collars are one of the most misunderstood training tools—and one of the most commonly fitted incorrectly.

A properly fitted prong collar should sit high on the neck, directly behind the ears and under the jaw. It should be snug enough that it doesn’t slide down the neck, but not so tight that it causes discomfort. When fitted correctly, the collar applies clear, even pressure and allows for effective communication between dog and handler.

A prong collar should never hang loosely like a flat collar. When it sits too low on the neck, it can reduce effectiveness, create inconsistent pressure, and increase the likelihood of the dog pulling into the tool.

Like any training equipment, a prong collar is not a shortcut or a solution on its own. It should be introduced fairly, used with proper guidance, and combined with clear training, reinforcement, and relationship building.

Varied exercise, safe off lead movement, swimming, training, and proper recovery all play a role in creating balanced, capable dogs. Just like us, dogs benefit from gradual conditioning and consistency rather than intensity alone.

Recall is often treated as just an obedience cue, but for many dogs, it’s the key to accessing a fuller, healthier life.

The ability to safely explore, sniff, run, and make choices is deeply important for canine welfare and behaviour health.

In rehabilitation work, freedom and movement matter. Reliable recall helps us provide those opportunities safely while maintaining trust and communication.

A dog who can come back when called often gets to experience much more of the world. 🐾

Exercise matters, but fulfilment goes far beyond just throwing a ball for an hour. Most dogs thrive when they’re learning, exploring, engaging with their owners, and given healthy outlets for their natural instincts ✨

When we start understanding the individual dog in front of us, training becomes clearer, communication becomes easier, and life with your dog becomes far more enjoyable ❤️

Would you believe me if I told you this dog had zero food drive? 👀

From just 8 weeks old, she would much rather run, chase, and bite than take food rewards — sometimes even refusing food for days completely by choice. No deprivation, no force… she simply wasn’t interested.

But watching this video now, you’d never guess that was once the case ✨

One of the biggest worries I hear from owners is:
“My dog won’t take treats, so I can’t train them.”

The good news? Food drive can absolutely be built. There are so many ways to increase motivation and engagement, and I love using a variety of methods tailored to each individual dog to help them enjoy training and want to work with their handler.

And remember, food isn’t the only way to train a dog either 😉🐾

Advocating for your dog in public isn’t about being confrontational.
It’s about being confident enough to speak up.

Too often we hesitate, we don’t want to look rude, dramatic or “that” owner. But true advocacy means stepping in before your dog feels the need to.

It means noticing the subtle signs of discomfort.
It means preventing chaotic greetings.
It means calmly saying “no” when necessary.

And yes, sometimes it means being okay with disappointing a stranger to protect your dog’s wellbeing.

Dogs shouldn’t have to escalate their behaviour to be heard.
They shouldn’t have to growl, bark or snap because we ignored the quieter signals first.

We don’t avoid the world, we teach dogs how to move through it with calm guidance.

When your dog knows you’ve got it handled, they can finally relax.

And that’s where real confidence is built. 🐾
