A very informative & helpful post from our pals at Stark Instincts Behaviour and Training ☺️
The difference between a Dog Trainer and a Behaviourist‼️🤔
It’s a distinction I get asked about lot, and the two roles can overlap, but they aren’t quite the same.
🐕 Dog Trainer
A trainer helps you teach your dog a skill. This might include:
• Loose-lead walking
• Recall
• Sit, down & stay
• Focus and engagement
• Puppy training
• Everyday life skills
Training is about teaching behaviours and building communication between you and your dog.
🧠 Behaviourist
A behaviourist focuses more on why a dog is behaving the way they are, particularly when there are more complex or emotionally driven behaviours involved.
This could include:
• Fear and anxiety
• Reactivity
• Aggression
• Separation-related behaviours
• Resource guarding
• Compulsive or repetitive behaviours
Rather than simply teaching the dog an alternative behaviour, they look at the underlying emotions, environment, learning history and motivation behind the behaviour, and develops a plan to address those factors.
And sometimes you need both!
Training and behaviour aren't completely separate. A behaviour plan will often involve training, and a good trainer should recognise when a dog needs more specialised behavioural support.
The most important thing is making sure the person you're working with has the appropriate knowledge, experience and qualifications for your dog's individual needs. A good trainer will recognise and refer on when the case is outside their remit!
So why do we have both in our name? 🐾
I have completed a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Animal Behaviour and Welfare, completing the requirements to become a pre-certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist.
Alongside this, I have extensive practical experience as a dog trainer, including my work as a trainer with a renowned assistance dog charity.
This means I have experience in both training and behaviour, allowing me to support you with both ascpects and look at your dog from both angles!
But I also believe in knowing when a case falls outside your scope of practice. Good behaviour support isn't about trying to do everything yourself, it's about working within your expertise and referring or collaborating with other professionals when appropriate. Just like doctors specialise, youll often find behaviourists do too!
So whether you need help teaching your puppy the basics, improving your dog's everyday skills, or understanding the reasons behind a challenging behaviour, I'm here to help‼️
Not sure whether you need a trainer or behaviour support? Drop me a message and I'm happy to point you in the right direction. 🐾
