Worried about cutting the quick? Cutting the quick when nail clipping can be painful, as well as result in bleeding. Past history of cutting the quick often makes pets (and owners) worried about nail trimming.

The quick is the blood supply to the nail. In white nails you can see the pink quick, making it easier to avoid, but in dark coloured nails it's impossible to spot.

As an advanced Registered Veterinary Nurse, I know where the quick should stop. But even as professionals, we sometimes nick the quick. But being prepared and knowing how to stop the bleed quickly, makes all the difference.

Does your pet hate having their nails clipped but they are really long?
You're not alone. A lot of pets hate having their nails clipped and find it really stressful, even my own dog!

Overgrown nails aren't just a cosmetic problem, they can change how your dog stands and walks, and over time that puts extra strain on their joints.

Left overgrown for too long and they can become uncomfortable, making walking a struggle and painful. They can even curl around into their pads.

Keeping your pets nails short helps keep them comfortable.

Halloween and fireworks night is creeping up. Does your dog turns into a nervous wreck at the first bang and you’re already dreading it? 😱

Here are my top tips to tackle this scary season! 🎃 🎆

Give your dog a safe space they can hide in, cover their crate in a blanket or blankets under the dining table. Find where they feel safest and use this area.

Use noise to mask the bangs, such as a calming music playlist or the TV. 🎇

Use a calming aid such as Pet Remedy or Adaptil. You can get 25% off Pet Remedy with the code PAWFECTPET25.

It’s too late to start desensitisation training for this year but if you start now, your dog will manage next year much better. Start with the sound on the lowest possible setting, keep it short and positive.

If you’re already doing all this and your dog is still struggling, now is the time to contact your vet and ask about medication which can help.

🌟 Star Pet Sunday 🌟

This week goes to these gorgeous three! Say hello to Bella, George and Chester the Newfoundlands! Also affectionately known as the bears 🐻‍❄️💗

These three gentle giants are always absolute stars when I look after them and they love a cuddle! Spending time with them is always a joy.

A special mention goes to Chester, who is being such a brave boy after his surgery. I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing him a smooth and speedy recovery! ❤️‍🩹

🌟 Star Pet Sunday 🌟

I've been seeing Meg for a while now for regular a**l glands, it's not the nicest of experiences but thankfully she still loves me! Every time she sees me she comes running over and presents her belly for some belly rubs!

Luckily, I also get to see her for other things too, like the odd walk and drop in visit.

Meg is always so well behaved and an absolute star to look after.

☀️ We are currently away travelling for the week!

We have walked along the beach and dunes of Dunkirk, attended The Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, visit war cemeteries and spent the day in Bruges so far! A very historical and beautiful trip so far. The dogs are loving it!

I have been responding to messages when I can, if I haven’t got back to you yet, I’ll be back on admin on Monday evening.

🌟 Star Pet Sunday 🌟

I visited Max for a nail trim, and it was such a fun visit. A few treats and a lot of fuss, and he made it very clear when I dared to stop fussing him 😂 Cheeky boy knew exactly what he wanted!

Nails all done and Max was a total star throughout! Well done Max!

Quick myth buster: a dry diet or dental chews alone won’t keep your pets teeth properly clean 🦷

They do help a little, and can be used as part of a full all round dental treatment plan.
But they don’t reach below the gum line.

Think of dental chews like only ever rinsing your mouth and not brushing.

Regular, proper cleaning is what makes the difference over time.
