I never wanted to use this page to be negative, but this REALLY needs addressing

Meet this beautiful 5 month old rescue Lurcher Cross 🧡

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST

His owner contacted us for a reactivity assessment, but all this pup wanted to do was play!

NOW FOR THE BACK STORY

This pup came from a big, well-known rescue (I won't name names). According to their behaviourist, he was "reactive" and also reactive towards his litter sibling, who he shared a kennel with. Because of this, he was moved into a foster home to be an only dog

What absolutely blows my mind is that this puppy had NEVER been socialised, yet had already been labelled REACTIVE!!!!

16 WEEKS IN RESCUE AND NEVER WALKED OR SOCIALISED!!!!

I genuinely cannot get my head around it!!!!

His owner then contacted the rescue's behaviourist for advice regarding his "reactivity" and was told... TO NOT WALK HIM!!!! 😩🤯😩🤯

I'm sorry, but WHAT?!?!

In total, this puppy went 19 WEEKS WITHOUT BEING WALKED OR SOCIALISED!!!! The most important developmental stage of a dog's life!!!!

Until his owner contacted us for advice. My first words were "Please get him out and walk him!!"

Today we assessed him PROPERLY and do you know what we found?

Absolutely no reactivity!
Absolutely no aggression!

What frustrates me most is that this puppy was labelled reactive before he was ever given the chance to be a puppy!!!!

How can we call a dog reactive when they've never been shown how to navigate the world in the first place?!

How can we know what a dog is capable of if we've never given them the opportunity to learn? This is becoming far too common in the dog world

At what point do we stop avoiding and start teaching?!?!🤯

Dogs need guidance
Dogs need experiences
Dogs need opportunities to learn
Dogs need exposure

They cannot learn how to cope with the world if they're constantly being kept away from it

This is exactly why I do NOT advocate avoidance and why it should NEVER be the go-to advice unless there are extreme circumstances where safety is genuinely at risk

The purpose of this post is to highlight advice that can have a huge impact on a dog's development and quality of life

Look at him playing with my dogs within 45 minutes of the assessment 🧡

This puppy didn’t need to be hidden away from the world!!

He needed someone to show him how to navigate it
He needed opportunities to learn
He needed exposure

LOOK AT HIM NOW!!!!

This is EXACTLY why we do what we do!!

If you’ve been told your dog is reactive, make sure they’ve been assessed properly
Because this puppy may never have been given the opportunities he has today if his owner had simply accepted that label

⚠️ Why Giving Dogs Unlimited Freedom Can Sometimes Create More Problems Than It Solves ⚠️

The knowledge and experience I have today wasn’t built over night

It came from living through these struggles with my own dog, learning from my mistakes, and applying those lessons to help hundreds of owners and their dogs since

When I got Rio 6 years ago, I felt sorry for him

He was a rescue, and like many owners, I wanted to give him the best life possible.

To me, that meant freedom

He slept in my bed from day one (these days, I view access to beds and sofas as a privilege that should come with boundaries, not an automatic right)

He had very few boundaries. I let him make a lot of decisions for himself because I genuinely believed that was what a happy dog needed

If he wanted to do something, I’d often let him. If he didn’t want to do something, I’d avoid pushing it

I thought I was being kind
I thought I was building trust
I thought I was doing everything right

The reality?
I was creating a dog that was struggling more and more

Because of this, Rio developed several behavioural issues ☹️

One of those was that he couldn’t cope with being left alone. (He destroyed oak doors, wooden blinds, and went through 3 crates, just to list a few 🫣). He would also toilet in the house when left

And if I’m honest, the way his behaviour was going, there were times I felt completely stuck.
The issues I’ve listed here only scratch the surface of what we were dealing with back then

And that’s when I started researching dog behaviour and putting everything I learned into practice.

What I eventually realised was something that completely changed how I viewed dog behaviour ‼️

Dogs don’t need unlimited freedom

They need guidance.

Because freedom and fulfilment are not the same thing. One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training today is that more freedom automatically creates a happier or more confident dog

In reality, many dogs thrive when they have structure, consistency, and clear expectations

Think about how many behavioural issues stem from poor decision-making:

➡️ Reacting at dogs on walks
➡️ Struggling to settle at home
➡️ Becoming frustrated when they don’t get what they want
➡️ Separation-related issues
➡️ Pulling towards every distraction they see

When we look at these behaviours, we often find dogs that are constantly making decisions without enough guidance from their owners

And that’s something I’m seeing more and more in my assessments

Owners come to us after trying advice that tells them to let their dog choose everything

To let them decide where they want to go
What they want to do
Who they want to interact with
How they want to respond to situations

But in many cases, the behaviours actually become worse because the dog is being given responsibility they aren’t equipped to handle.

Dogs don’t need more responsibility
‼️ They need more support‼️

The turning point with Rio wasn’t when I gave him more freedom. It was when I started giving him more clarity

Clear boundaries, routines, expectations & guidance

And the more guidance I provided, the more settled he became (and still to this day, I implement everything I put in place back then with all my dogs)

The more confident he became
The more reliable he became
And today, he’s genuinely the best dog

Not because I controlled every aspect of his life

But because I learned the difference between a dog having freedom and a dog having guidance, structure, and direction🧡

🚨 Stress Signals Owners Often Miss 🚨

One of the biggest mistakes I see when assessing behavioural issues is owners focusing on the reaction itself while missing all the communication that came before it.

Dogs rarely go from relaxed to reactive in an instant.

In most cases, they’re showing subtle signs of stress, conflict, uncertainty, or discomfort long before the barking, lunging, growling, or avoidance begins

The photo below is Trixie during her reactivity assessment. At this stage, she hadn’t barked, lunged, or reacted, but she was repeatedly lip licking. This is a signal that many owners either miss or dismiss, yet it can provide valuable insight into a dog’s emotional state long before a reaction occurs

Common stress signals include:

• Repeated lip licking unrelated to food
• Yawning
• Increased panting despite appropriate temperatures
• Head turns and gaze avoidance
• Difficulty disengaging from triggers
• Changes in food motivation or treat-taking behaviour
• Increased scanning of the environment
• Pacing, restlessness, or an inability to settle

These behaviours are often dismissed as insignificant, yet they can provide valuable insight into your dog’s emotional state

Understanding canine body language allows us to identify when a dog is approaching their threshold, rather than waiting until they’ve already crossed it.

This is particularly important for dogs struggling with reactivity.

The barking and lunging that owners see are often the final stage of a much longer chain of communication.

The question isn’t always:

❌ “Why did my dog react?”

It’s often:

✅ “What was my dog trying to tell me before the reaction happened?”

Beautiful Miniature Bull Terrier at our puppy class 🧡

Whilst we’re helping her learn neutrality around other dogs and distractions, we’re also helping desensitise her to different terrains and surfaces for the show ring 🧡😆

This is why I’m always talking about the importance of a good training setup. What looks like a simple puppy class is often helping dogs in so many different ways at the same time.

One exercise. Multiple benefits. 🐾

I honestly couldn’t recommend this company enough. I’m incredibly particular about who looks after my dogs - so much so that my mother-in-law is usually the only person I trust to have them!

But if I ever needed pet sitting, I wouldn’t hesitate to use Ryan at MBF Dog Walking & Pet Services. That says a lot coming from me!!😂

I trusted Ryan with my dogs when he helped walk them while we were away last year, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services to anyone looking for reliable, trustworthy pet care❗️

⭐️ Overnight Pet Sitting 🐾

Looking for someone trustworthy to stay with your pet while you’re away? My overnight pet sitting service provides your pets with comfort, companionship and their usual routine in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

🏡 What’s Included?

My overnight pet sitting service runs from 6:00PM until 8:00AM and is designed to give your pets company, care and reassurance throughout the evening and night.

As part of the overnight stay, your dog(s) will receive an evening walk after I arrive and a morning walk before I leave, helping to maintain their normal routine and ensuring they get the exercise and enrichment they need while you’re away.

I bring everything I need with me, including my own camp bed, food, drinks and personal essentials, so there is very little disruption to your home. I’m also happy to set up camp in whichever room you feel is most suitable.

🐶 During My Stay I Can:

✅ Feed and provide fresh water
✅ Give toilet breaks and companionship
✅ Maintain your pet’s normal evening and morning routine
✅ Take your dog(s) for a walk upon my arrival to help them settle for the evening
✅ Take your dog(s) for a morning walk before my departure
✅ Provide plenty of fuss, attention and cuddles
✅ Administer medication if required (please discuss beforehand)
✅ Keep your home secure while you’re away
✅ Put bins out for collection day if required
✅ Leave your home clean, tidy and exactly as I found it

⚠️ Please Note

This is an overnight service only, covering the hours of 6:00PM – 8:00AM.

If you are booking multiple nights and would like your pet cared for during the daytime hours when I am not present, additional services must be booked separately. For example:

🐾 Drop-In Visits
🐾 Solo Walks
🐾 Group Walks

This ensures your pet receives the appropriate level of care and attention throughout the day.

🤝 A Small Request

If you have family members, friends, neighbours, cleaners, dog walkers or anybody else visiting your home while I am pet sitting, I would really appreciate being informed beforehand. This helps avoid any confusion and ensures everyone involved in your pet’s care is aware of each other, allowing everything to run smoothly.

💳 Booking & Payment Information

To secure your booking, a £20 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of confirmation. This reserves your requested date(s) and prevents availability from being offered elsewhere.

The remaining balance must be paid in full at least 7 days before the service begins.

Previously, final payment was due after the service had taken place. However, I have now updated this policy to help streamline the booking process, ensure dates are fully secured and allow me to focus entirely on caring for your pets rather than organising payments.

📅 Please note that bookings are not confirmed until the deposit has been received.

—-

My aim is always to provide your pets with the highest standard of care while giving you complete peace of mind knowing they are safe, comfortable and well looked after in their own home.

A free meet & greet is required before any booking can take place. This gives us the opportunity to get to know one another, discuss your pet’s routine, needs and personality, and ensure I’m the right fit for both you and your pet.

If you’d like to discuss your pet’s needs or arrange a meet & greet, please feel free to get in touch.
