I never wanted to use this page to be negative, but this REALLY needs addressing
Meet this beautiful 5 month old rescue Lurcher Cross 🧡
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST
His owner contacted us for a reactivity assessment, but all this pup wanted to do was play!
NOW FOR THE BACK STORY
This pup came from a big, well-known rescue (I won't name names). According to their behaviourist, he was "reactive" and also reactive towards his litter sibling, who he shared a kennel with. Because of this, he was moved into a foster home to be an only dog
What absolutely blows my mind is that this puppy had NEVER been socialised, yet had already been labelled REACTIVE!!!!
16 WEEKS IN RESCUE AND NEVER WALKED OR SOCIALISED!!!!
I genuinely cannot get my head around it!!!!
His owner then contacted the rescue's behaviourist for advice regarding his "reactivity" and was told... TO NOT WALK HIM!!!! 😩🤯😩🤯
I'm sorry, but WHAT?!?!
In total, this puppy went 19 WEEKS WITHOUT BEING WALKED OR SOCIALISED!!!! The most important developmental stage of a dog's life!!!!
Until his owner contacted us for advice. My first words were "Please get him out and walk him!!"
Today we assessed him PROPERLY and do you know what we found?
Absolutely no reactivity!
Absolutely no aggression!
What frustrates me most is that this puppy was labelled reactive before he was ever given the chance to be a puppy!!!!
How can we call a dog reactive when they've never been shown how to navigate the world in the first place?!
How can we know what a dog is capable of if we've never given them the opportunity to learn? This is becoming far too common in the dog world
At what point do we stop avoiding and start teaching?!?!🤯
Dogs need guidance
Dogs need experiences
Dogs need opportunities to learn
Dogs need exposure
They cannot learn how to cope with the world if they're constantly being kept away from it
This is exactly why I do NOT advocate avoidance and why it should NEVER be the go-to advice unless there are extreme circumstances where safety is genuinely at risk
The purpose of this post is to highlight advice that can have a huge impact on a dog's development and quality of life
Look at him playing with my dogs within 45 minutes of the assessment 🧡
This puppy didn’t need to be hidden away from the world!!
He needed someone to show him how to navigate it
He needed opportunities to learn
He needed exposure
LOOK AT HIM NOW!!!!
This is EXACTLY why we do what we do!!
If you’ve been told your dog is reactive, make sure they’ve been assessed properly
Because this puppy may never have been given the opportunities he has today if his owner had simply accepted that label
